Are anyone's TTC plans affected by the economy?

I just posted on the teacher's thread, but the NYC Board of Ed is in major financial trouble. We were told that everyone with under 7 years is in danger of being excessed...and I fall into that catergory. If I'm laid off and have to get a job in another school system, it takes 2 years for me to get my tenure back... Chat Icon Not sure what to do. Postpone TTC until we're more sure of what will hapen next? Pretend that this elephant in the room doesn't exist and keep on swimming?

Someone talk me off the ledge.

Luckily DH and I are pretty safe even with the economy going on. Nevertheless we are making a big effort to save a lot this year because we are TTC.

My feeling is you can't plan your life around things that may or may not happen. I wouldn't stop TTC but maybe cut back on unnecessary expenses and make sure you have an emergency back up savings in case something does happen.

Now that I have started I really wish we had started sooner because who knows how long it will take and so many things can go wrong.

Just try and hope for the best but plan for the worst Chat Icon

Under our current contract, yes. But not if the mayor declares a financial crisis. And the city is 6 BILLION dollars in the hole.

Re: Are anyone's TTC plans affected by the economy?

There will never be a perfect time to TTC, and I hate to be Debbie Downer, but the economy is not going to get better anytime remotely soon. If anything it is going to get worse, so if you put it off due to the economic factors, you may be putting it off for a long time.

In my situation i am out of work and my husband works and goes to school full time (I can't work due to an injury). It is going to be tight, and it is a financial risk for us TTC and having a baby, but in the long run it will just mean we can't buy a house as soon as we would like, no big vacations, etc. I am willing to live without to have a child.

Re: Are anyone's TTC plans affected by the economy?

DH and i have good job security---but we have debt. and for awhile i kept sayign "i want to be out of debt before having a baby" and DH would respond "bills will always be there babe" it took me a long time to grasp that---and like so many say....if you wait for the "right time" you'll never find it--cause there will always be something.

the way i see it--having a baby changes everything and it even changes how you handle things and you will always find a way no matter what! only you and your DH know whats right, but economy wise i think there will always be issues and you sometimes just have to take a leap of faith with choices in life

I try to think that we are in a safe spot now. But I guess you never know with anything. We decided this is a good time for us. If we wait till we have as much money as we want I dont think we will ever TTC. So to answer your question no change in our plans. Chat Icon

We are poor as crap, and we already have a child. We hardly can get by as it is, but I don't want to look back and tell DC that there is no sibling for you because mommy and daddy were too poor.

I'm hoping one day our finances won't be as bad as they are. But as poor as we are, I don't regret for a second being poor with our child...

Re: Are anyone's TTC plans affected by the economy?

I was thinking the same way as you a few months ago. I was laid off Dec. 3rd, was already pregnant and didn't even know it....we stopped TTC after me getting laid off b/c we were worried about finances. Well once I knew I was pregnant we were so thrilled we knew everything was happening for a reason, and we decided I wouldn't even go back to work I was just going to babysit my niece everyday for some extra cash. Now that I've miscarried you realize the financial stuff will always be there, but if you are ready to have a baby now DO IT! If you know in your heart you want it, then right now may end up being the perfect time for you and you don't even know it. It's natural to be scared in uncertain financial times, but things will be ok. If I find another job I will most likely take a paycut, but it doesn't matter to us anymore, having a baby is our #1 priority at this point.

its easier said than done, but don't worry for now, things will work out. Chat Icon

No-the thought has crossed our minds but the fact of the matter is that we want more children. The down turn in the economy will not last forever and we won't let a temporary sour economy impact our long term family plans.

The economy is killing DH's business, but it's not stopping us for starting a family. Unfortunately we realized too early that every moment counts...and we're not wasting another day trying to grow our family.

I am of the mind that there will never be a perfect time - you can always have more money, you can always have less debt, a better place to live, a better paying job, etc etc. So for us, we are going by how we feel and the fact that we want to be parents. We may have to go without, especially during the next couple/few years while the economy is worse than what we've seen in our lifetimes, but it will eventually get better we presume. Also, neither of us are getting younger and we don't want to put things off TOO much longer because we'd like more than one.

We've been wary of the economy - but honestly... there's never going to be "enough money", it's never going to be the "right time", so we say just do it and we'll handle the finances at that point...

What she said..

Quite frankly, my parents did it on much less with three kids...and I am sure that our standard of poor, was their standard of wealthy...we will be trying again this year...stock market crash or not...
