Are flagstone patios outdated? [Poll]
DH and I have always agreed that when we rip up our deck, a multicolored flagstone patio would go in it's place.
I was talking to a decking guy the other day and he had nothing to show me in catalog. When I mentioned that, he said "I see, you want the old fashioned look."
If you were looking at a home with a flagstone patio, would you think "Ugh, how old and outdated."?
Some of the ones I found online - which don't seem so bad to me...?

If it's what you like - just do it. Unless you are planning to sell the house in the next few years as it may not do anything to increase the value.

Re: Are flagstone patios outdated? [Poll]
I don't think so--I thinks it looks really nice. I didn't knwo it was 'out', but I guess its just not what other people are doing now but I like it better than some of the other types of newer patios I've seen.
My parents are getting just plain 'ol concrete, which is probably even more old fashioned, but it's what they want.
ETA-- I like the rectangles--but I am a sucker for neat & orderly, I guess.

Re: Are flagstone patios outdated? [Poll]
I voted "Hell No!" Always a classic, regardless of shape!!!!
We were going to use bluestone, but I was concerned about the heat absorption and how slippery it can get (we had a bluestone walkway.) So we opted to use Travertine instead. It doesn't retain heat and the tumbled travertine has great traction, but is still "soft" on the feet. I actually would go to stone yards with flip-flops on so I could walk on different materials barefoot. (I wanted my kids to be able to walk on the patio without issue.) My other favorite is Sandstone (I love the veining), but it stains easily and we have too many surrounding trees that drop leaves.

Re: Are flagstone patios outdated? [Poll]
Good point on slipperyness - I never thought about that. When I think of flagstone patios, I think of the same type of stone.
Like CC said, it came be different types of stone too - so I guess if I say "flagstone", it's more of like a style then a material... Hrm...

Ah see, that's why I'm asking. We are planning on selling in probably 10 years. So although we may like it, we also have to keep in mind what common opinion is.

Bluestone is a classic New England/North East material. I don't forsee that ever going out of style. All the beautiful estates/mansions use that or standard brick. I view natural material as more of a selling point than the pavers that are used nowadays.

ITA with Chatham, I love it and all natural stone. It would be a selling point for me. The beautiful material and the fact that its not the same as my neighbors.

Re: Are flagstone patios outdated? [Poll]
i absolutely LOVE the first example that PP put up. I would do taht in a heartbeat, but the others, not so in love with.... there must be something to do with slipperiness... like a glaze or something??
I LOVE the ones that have moss growing through or grass... that's my FAVORITE!

I don't think they are outdated at all.
I think the square or uneven shape really depends on your house, type of landscaping you have.

To me it looks like a more classic lood and expensive option that you'd find with a high-end home on the north shore gold coast. I would pick a style and color that doesn't look out of place with the style of the house but I don't see it as out of date.

I don't think they are outdated at all, but like other posters said - I really think you have to ensure that it flows with the style of your house.

agreed. I think it looks classic and as a buyer, it would probably make a bigger appeal to me than other materials out there.
