Re: Are Smithtown schools bad?
Your neighbor lives in a bubble and has no idea what a "bad" school district is, because Smithtown certainly isn't even CLOSE to being one!

I don't see the correlation of a school being worse just because there may be a greater percentage of kids receiving free lunches or having limited English.
That seems a little... ignorant.
Smithtown SD is good with lots of resources. I would never call it bad.
I am just going to say that unfortunately it is not ignorant, it is the truth. I am a teacher and I see it first hand. It is by far, whether it be poltically correct or not, a huge factor on whether or not a district is considered "good."

If you feel that way, contact the administrators on both LongIslandSchools.com and Newsday.com and let them know how you feel. I don't agree with how you feel but you are entitled to it. However, don't start insinuating that I'm ignorant just because I passed along the statistical information from their site and explained why they use what they use.
That is one of the major factors they include in their statistical reports and every school report I've seen online uses the same format. The reports are solely published in order to inform residents of the school district's performances and conditions - so that residents can make an educated decision as to where to send their children to school.

You said you typically look at the last section of statistics (which include free lunch numbers and non-English speaking numbers). For whatever reason, those factors are important to you and your family. Rock on.

Unfortunately there is a correlation to lower socio-economic households and performance in school. But only a correlation, it's not a direct factor that says if you are poor, you will will not graduate. The correlation is there mostly, b/c is these households it may be single parents or parents working multiple jobs and the focus is not on getting the kids to do their school work. (DH and I both work and it IS difficult to get motivated to get two kids to do their hw over extracurricular activities, dinner and 21st century gadgets - I can easily see how some parents that don't have as strong as educational values/goals that I do might give in to the exhaustion. I want to nightly)
You absolutely DO want to look at graduation rate and advance regents diplomas for a district. Children DO respond to peer pressure. Sometimes the pressure is to achieve. I know I would have been mortified if I didn't get a Regents diploma when I was in school (back in the old days, when you didn't have to get a Regents diploma - I guess today it would be advanced). I was surrounded by achievers and a lot of that has to do with the school district.
And I know when I heard that ONE person dropped out the year ahead of me, it was like they murdered someone. I have worked in schools where the drop out rate is lower and there is not that stigma associated with dropping out.

I agree. This (free lunch/reduced lunch) was a factor that I looked at when I was looking at school districts.

That's what you took from my post?!
You might want to go back to school and work on reading and comprehension!
Oh and English is both my father-in-law's and husband's second language.

Every district s dealing with budget cuts so you will never escape that
And drug use.....it's everywhere and IMO the better districts where the kids have money you see the serious drugs being used. In the poorer districts kids don't have the money to buy a lot of the drugs
Exactly!!!!!
