Are there any laws regarding being told you have to work the weekend and not get paid for it?
Just asking because I am frustrated. I work for a VERY LARGE company and the new thing here is they are demanding us to work Sat & Sun BUT we will NOT be getting paid for it. oh and if we cant the consequences will be discussed later on. As if money is not already tight, now I have to give up my family time on the weekend to work for free???
Sorry for the vent!!

I don't think so.
I worked for a very large company that is top on the list of "Best Companies to work for" and was OFTEN forced to work weekends and over 90 hour weeks at times.
We were not compensated any extra but were told it was included in our "overall" compensation package.
Burned out after only 2 years. Ha! What a surprise!

I wonder if the consequences are better than working the weekends.
I'd also start looking for another job if you can.
I also 'what would happen' if all of the people being told to work on weekends came together and refused. They'd have no employees then.

Are you an hourly or salaried employee? Are you in a management position? If you think you are being taken advantage of speak with a labor lawyer.

Ah, the joys of being a salaried employee.
Sometimes I know I'd make more if I was an hourly consultant, even having to pay for health insurance, etc.

I just looked this up because I could swear there is some kind of law.
I found this One Day Rest In Seven
Maybe you can read through it and see if it pertains to you
I cant believe anyone would make someone work 7 days a week with no compensation. Talk about horrible bosses!

Re: Are there any laws regarding being told you have to work the weekend and not get paid for it?
I think certain jobs/positions it comes with the territory.
This is why I vowed to never be a supervisor anymore once my DS was born.
I also know sometimes at my agency, we get stuck having to go out and do things at the last minute after business hours and it really $ucks.
It's very RARE that this happens though.
If it was happening all the time though, or I was told I HAD to do this stuff, I would be on the fast track to find myself a new job.
It's rough...........I also think with the state of the economy, more and more employers are doing things like this because they also know they can get away with it because there are limited jobs out there.

This would be really tough to do, especially in this economy. I may not be happy at my job right now, but it sure beats the unemployment line. I think many people would agree it's not worth the risk.

Even if you're salaried, how can they "make" you work on the weekends? My contract states that my hours are 8:30 - 5:00pm M-F. It says nothign about working weekends. I would flat out refuse.

They can say you are not living up to the job agreement. The job has changed and you need to work extra hours. If you don't abide, we'll find someone else who will.

Re: Are there any laws regarding being told you have to work the weekend and not get paid for it?
At will employees that are salaried can be asked to work more days or longer hours. That totally sucks.
Does it happen all the time? Once in a while?
If it continues and there is no end in sight I would consider another job. Is there a chance they will compensate you by giving you comp time?
