are there any NON-jewish girls here that are married to jewish guys? (sorta long, sorry)
hopefully there's somebody out there who has been in or is in the same situation as us! here's the deal: DH is jewish. i just switched to a new obgyn and she suggested that DH have genetic testing done before we start TTC. she gave us a bunch of literature on it but said the lab order would have to come from our primary doc since DH is her patient. we went to our primary doc and she was super confused and didn't even know the codes to put on the lab forms she said normally this is handled through the obgyn. she gave us a "note" to bring to the lab telling them to do the full panel of jewish genetic testing, but for some reason this makes me super nervous. i mean, shouldn't the dr fill out the lab form?!?!?! also, there is a part of me that doesn't even think we NEED to do this b/c i'm not jewish and the liklihood of me and DH both being carriers of any of these diseases is pretty slim (from what i understand at least). so basically now i'm all confused and don't know where to go from here. i'm thinking of calling my obgyn but i'm not sure what i'm even calling for!
so, my question is......if your DH is jewish, did he do this sort of testing AND if he did, who wrote the lab slip?
thanks in advance for any/all advice! sorry this is so long!

hi...i'm jewish and DH isn't but we are both Eastern Europenan / Mediteranian decent so if your doc is talking about being a carrier for the genetic disorders carried by these backrounds and you are both in the pool of being a possible carrier then they should only have to test you. In order to be able to pass something like CF then both parents have to be carriers, if 1 isn't then it's can't happen. Hope this helps.

Re: are there any NON-jewish girls here that are married to jewish guys? (sorta long, sorry)
while i don't know of anyone with the EXACT same situation - my sister in law IS Jewish and had to have the FULL panel of bloodwork done on herself.
It's very, very important for both you and him that he be tested. What they found with my SIL was that she is a carrier of a pretty bad disease (i'm sorry, i don't remember the name, but it typically equals death by 50). Something about she has 2 markers for it, but if she had 3 - that would mean the baby would get it. It wound up with her entire family needing to be tested...(her sister, brother, mother & father, even though her mom & dad are over 50, they STILL had to be tested). Once testing was complete, they all have 2 of the markers...which is fine.
I do think it's odd that your OB wouldn't send DH for the bloodwork, I know when we spoke to our OB, once we had our BFP, she asked us no less than 5 times if we had Jewish relatives on either side..
Can you call the OB, let them know what your regular doc said and see what she suggests from there?

Re: are there any NON-jewish girls here that are married to jewish guys? (sorta long, sorry)
I'm Jewish, S/O is not , i needed to do all sorts of blood work, only because we were doing IVF. The genetic counselor told us it was not necessary for him to be tested, he also stated that it was not necessary for me to be tested for certain "Jewish traits", because he was not jewish....and both needed to be carriers.
I tested anyway, so if you have the insurance, just get tested. it;s not really a big deal to concern your self with.

Re: are there any NON-jewish girls here that are married to jewish guys? (sorta long, sorry)
thank you sweety!
like someone else above said - it cannot hurt to have the tests done - if you have insurance and it'll be covered, it's just blood - it's nothing terribly invasive!
I was really surprised when my SIL told me that news...i was very nervous for her sister (who, at the time had not been tested yet) - but she has since...
again - i don't know if it's different for the man - but i'd think that something you MIGHT want to know could come up!

Re: are there any NON-jewish girls here that are married to jewish guys? (sorta long, sorry)
hmm.. now you've got me thinking/worried
I'm not Jewish but DH is and we're TTC
If/when we get pregnant, i'll be sure to mention this to my Dr. as she didn't ask me when i told her i wanted to ttc.
But from what i'm understanding, most of the genetically carried diseases are passed along when both parents are Jewish right?
So do you think i have anything to worry about?

We are both Jewish and our geneticist wrote out the lab slip.
Are you of Eastern European or Mediterranean decent? That might be way they are doing the testing that way-but I am not positive.

You probably don't-even a lot of Jewish couples have no problems. But it also has to do with where your family comes from-Eastern European or Mediterranean for example. I wouldn't worry too much.

My dh is Jewish and I am not. They sent me for all the blood work. If I had come back + for any of it then Dh would of had to be tested. But I was - so he didn't have to go.

DH is Jewish and when I told my OBGYn that I got married he immediately wrote me up a script with out a date on it to get lab testing done. I can go whenever I want, right to the lab.

this is really interesting. it's surprising how different obgyn's do things so varied. my obgyn said that DH should be tested first and then if he comes back positive for anything, they'll test me. strange. when she calls me back i'm gonna ask her about this. thanks for sharing!
