Re: How do you keep the pacifier in their mouth?

Our DS refused to keep it in his mouth. The only way it would stay was if we were holding it into his mouth and that seemed to defeat the purpose... so we ended up giving up and he was not a pacifier baby!

One less thing he will have to give up in the future!

I feel the same way, but then how do you clam your baby. I think he's getting used to my arms -- and that's a bad habbit too! He's 2 months and I just want a 20 min napChat Icon

I used to put my DD on her side and lay her burp cloth under her to help prop it up. Chat Icon

There is also something for the Soothie pacifiers called a Wubbanub.

If he doesn't want the pacifier he will spit it out, my son never wanted one. I won't force the matter, at 2 months old (imo) he wants comforting from you, its a big bad old world out there! Enjoy it! He won't be a baby forever!

Good luck!

Ok how do you start dinner, if he is crying? I just fed him and he seems content, I put him in the pack-n-play and he started crying and screaming again.

edited to say: sorry if I sounded rude, its just I have a killer headache (I have them everyday -- I'm going for a MRI on Wed) and I'm crying myself

Rylan doesn't use on but I heard that when they are sucking on it you should gently try to pull it out of their mouth so that they suck harder to try and keep it in. The more you do this they say DC will be able to keep it in better.

Was just gonna post this.

It is like using reverse psychology. The more you pull the more they will suck harder on the pacifer. Should work.

Re: Are there any secrets to keeping the pacifier in their mouth?

WE used it only for nap and bed time. So when i was holding him and rocking him to sleep that is when i used it and he had a harder time spitting it out. Gavitational thing i guess.

He really never uses it though.

You mean aside from duct tape???

My DH used to swaddle DS and then tuck the binky edge under the "lip" of the blanket so it would stay in..it worked really well...

Additionally have you tried different binkys? Sometimes that's the issue. We use latex nipples and we tried giving DS silicone binkys. He just didnt really like them....once we switched to the latex ones he kept them in his mount...

(PS..Im kidding about the duct tape)

Ryan just started taking one at 13 + wks after trying several pacifier brands. We're using the Playtex Binky - the one designed for breastfed babies. Also, when you're holding it in his mouth, try to pull it down forcing DC to suck harder to keep it in - it helps train them to accept it.

i would try different kinds...DD woudlnt take the Nuby ones...they are pretty small...but she took the avent ones great...they are longer so her tongue cant push them out as easily as other ones

Ditto these are the only ones dd likes. Also the pulling gently on it helps.

We also did the swaddle thing and tucked it over a little.

Duct Tape!!!

Just Kidding!!!!!!!!!!!

When Ava was a newborn, I wondered the same thing. In one of my millions of baby books, it said to put it in the baby's mouth and try to pull it out, but let them suck it back in. It is suppossed to strengthen the mouth muscles.

I agree with the Avent binkies! DS was using the Soothie ones we got from the hospital......but just today I found the Avent stays in better & he sucks for much longer on it! Enough time tonight for us to eat dinner while he hung in his bouncy seat!!! And even after his bath tonight he kept it in while we played on the bed for almost an hour!!

Re: Are there any secrets to keeping the pacifier in their mouth?

My DD never took a paci and we tried several brands. She's just not a paci baby.

There was a period in the first few months where she never wanted to be put down. I do think there are times that babies cry because they need you and comfort, and when you give it to them, they become more self-sufficient because they know you always have their back.

Another thing, is your DC's appetite growing? I know DD would get crabby too soon after her last feeding and what I thought was just fussiness was a hungry cry. I was BFing on demand so our schedule was a little more erratic.

I once made a cake from scratch while holding a baby! I think when you have a newborn who needs lots of attention, things like dinner come out of a ready meal box, and other things have to take a lower priority.

I agree, its about picking and choosing whats important. DS is not a paci baby, we tried several different type, he just didnt see the point! Instead of calming him, it actually made him more upset. Now at 6 months he plays with his paci but rarely uses it for its designed purpose.

To calm him, I would just pick him up carry him around until he settled. I would cook with his bouncy seat in the kitchen on the table with the fan on in January so he was occupied. I put the swing on with the white noise, he would fall asleep to the vacuum so I would let that run while I was doing something else. And at times when all failed he cried for a little while.

Its not a bad thing if your child doesn't want a paci, its not a cure-all for every child! You just have to experiment until you find what works best for your little one.
