Are we mature enough to discuss the race issue? Q. about expectations.

Questions:

1.) Thinking back to any time in your life before we knew who would run in this election, did you ever wonder whether we would have a non-white president during your lifetime?

2.) If you never thought about it, do you think that if asked, you would have said that it was going to happen? OR, if you did think about it, did you think it would happen during your lifetime?

My answer: I thought that we might have a non-white president at some point in my life time. I did not think it would happen while my parents' generation was still alive. I thought that a generation that went to school before Brown vs. Bd of Ed. would not see a non-white president.

These questions are NOT to find out how you feel about having a black president-elect or about how you feel about anything Obama stands for. It is NOT to find out whether you think there would have been riots if he were not elected. It is not for bickering. It is not for accusing other people of ignorance or anything else. I am just curious to see who thought like I did or to see how people thought.

Feel free to simply answer yes or no if you do not care to explain.

If this gets ugly I will request to have it pulled.

I thought I would be a little old lady before I saw it happen.

I'm Black and I thought it would be a VERY long time before I saw it happen, IF I saw it at all. I figured I would just see it on some television show or movie where the President just gets killed off.

I'm a Hispanic woman, and I honestly did not believe we would have a minority in the White House before a woman....I figured we'd have a Caucasian woman before a minority of any sex....I won't lie. I'm beyond shocked this has happened and I'm so proud and excited it has...knowing I cast a vote for him makes me feel proud.

Maybe. I thought it would happen when I was older

I thought a woman would make it first. But still years from now.

Re: Are we mature enough to discuss the race issue? Q. about expectations.

4 or 8 years ago, I still thought we would have either a female or AA as president, but not until at least 2020.

I'm very glad my estimate was way off.... Chat Icon

I did not think I would be alive to see a non-white president. I am SO glad I got to be part of this history in the making

I have wondered if we would ever have a black president. I always thought we'd be more likely to have a black president than a woman president.

ITA. Remember, black men got the right to vote before ANY woman.

Congrats to Obama for making history!!!

Re: Are we mature enough to discuss the race issue? Q. about expectations.

I have absolutely believed that at some point in my life, I would live to see a black president. This means so much to me.

I have a Bachelors in History and am working on my Masters in History. My whole specialty, my whole area of expertise, has been in the field of 19th century African American relations.

This is special and near and dear to my heart.

As a Black woman in America, NO! I did not think it would happen in my lifetime. HELL, I'll be honest and say that up until the votes starting coming in last night, I didn't think Obama would win. As politically correct as we all try to be, race is and will always play a huge factor for many people. I thought it would have been a woman before ANY minority.

With that said, I am BEYOND excited that there is now a QUALIFIED African-American man in office. I can now tell my son, "Yes honey! You can be the President of the United States of America! Look at President OBAMA!!!"

Re: Are we mature enough to discuss the race issue? Q. about expectations.

I never thought about if there would ever be a black, jewish, italian, asian, hispanic, mormon, atheist, etc. president in my lifetime.

What I have thought about, for as long as I can remember, is when we will have a female president. Chat Icon
