According to something I saw on the news, more black people are voting in this election than ever before and primarily for Obama.

Do you think some black people (who are not necessarily politics savvy or people who have never voted before) are voting for Obama just b/c he is black?

I have seen many interviews on TV where they are interviewing black people and it seems like that is the only reason b/c the people interviewed didn't know anything about his policies. DH works in a primarily black area and more than once when he has arrested someone they have said to him "arrest me now b/c once Obama gets elected you won't be able to arrest me anymore".

Just curious what your thoughts are.

race is absolutely playing a big role in this election.

I think it would be naive to think race was not involved.

people are more interested in things when they can relate.

if they think Obama will play favorites, people would be sadly mistaken.

if his record as President of the Harvard Law Review is any indication, Homie don't play that.

Honestly, I think a lot of white people are voting for McCain b/c he is white and a lot of black people are voting for Obama b/c he is black. I think it happens no matter what, especially in this election!

I do think race is playing a strong part in this election. Just as there are people who are voting for/against Obama because of his race, the same is happening with McCain/Palin because she is a woman.

Howard Stern had something on his program where this guy was talking to people in Harlem, asking them who they were voting for. He tricked them by saying, "Do you feel comfortable with his pro-life stance?" "Are you happy with his choice of VP, Sarah Palin?" He talked to about 3 different people who just yessed him to death, and didn't even notice he was talking about the McCain/Palin ticket.

I don't think this is a fair representation of the African American race...but there will be ignorant voters, as always.

Just as there will be, sadly, ignorant voters who will vote for McCain so that there will not be an African American president.

I think there are just as many voting AGAINST him because he's black. I've heard comments firsthand.

Sure I do. Just like I think that there are racist white voters who also have not voted before but today came out to vote against a black president.

Race sadly does play a factor for many. There are people voting for him just b/c he is black, and others who are voting against him for the same reason, as well as for the sound of his name.

There are always going to be people who make decisions based on superficial reasons.

I think so, and I think there are people not voting for him based on race. Either way, I think it is bad as it is letting his race become a factor. It should no more be a reason to vote for him than against him! It shouldn't matter at all. BUT - people, especially those who are less informed on issues (of any race, gender, etc - this is NOT meant to single any one group out) tend to vote for candidates they can identify with which may explain some of the race-based voting, moms voting for Palin, etc.

I think that many people do not vote based upon the candidate's policies, but on his or her personal characteristics. Like race, gender, religion, personal family background, etc...

But you know what, I think that part of it is understandable that African Americans would want to vote for Obama. He is the first African American candidate for president and I imagine they feel like he's really going to represent them.

I work in a very diverse environment and many many white people i work with are voting for Obama. However, I don't know any black people that are voting for McCAin. I asked my friend, who is black, if she knows any friends/family that are black that are voting for McCain and she laughed at me. Do I think many black people are voting for obama b/c he is black? Absolutely. Do I think that they have that right? ABsolutely. There is no requirement that you must have a reason for voting for a candidate - it is nobody's business

We were denied the right to vote JUST because we're Black..

We are pulled over on the highway JUST because we're Black..

We are denied jobs, loans, and houses JUST because we're Black

So when we have a brilliant Candidate for president who is BLACK YEP! I am voting for him JUST because he's black..this is historic..

and the fact that I agree with his policies is the icing on the cake. I will admit without shame or fear that I am HAPPY, THRILLED, ECSTATIC that a Black man will be the next president of the United States.. but it is not only because he's Black.. he's also qualified.. The same ardent support would not be provided if it was Flava Flav running..

I voted for Obama because I believe in his policies and the vision he has for his country. But am I happy that the man I voted for was Black? Heck yeah! When I voted I reflected on my ancestors who had to fight to even get the right to vote and who were beaten and killed to get that right. I am very proud to see this day and I'm sure that is what alot of Black people were thinking about today.

Criminals in general aren't too bright, so I'm not surprised that they're saying things like that.

As for average, non-criminal African-Americans, I think there's probably a range. I also work in a diverse environment, and my colleagues who are black may be biased in that direction because of his color BUT these are people who tend to be Democrats anyway. And these are people who've followed the election and know the issues.

I also think that it's not so easily boiled down to "I'm black and so's he, so he's getting my vote"; I think that there is a sense of pride in many people that is motivating them. For my students, who obviously can't vote yet, I see more of that pride than the attitude of "Hey, now I'll be able to break the law 'cause Obama will get me off!"

I asked my grandfather (85 yrs old.. grew up without being able to freely vote.. saw family members lynched in the racist south) how did it feel to vote for a qualified Black man for president..
