Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
I am afraid of big dogs, but only because I witnessed a friend's "mild mannered" dog attack someone when I was small.
I would never, however, ask someone to put their dog away (especially if the dog is on it's owner's lap)
I usually just deal by not going near the dog if I could help it.
I do feel badly though when someone's dog comes up to me and wAnts to be pet, because I do not feel comfortable petting them at all. I feel like the owners might think I don't like them, but they just make me nervous.

If I onwed a dog and I saw that someone was uncomfortable with my dog being around, I would certainly remove the dog from that room and put them somewhere else. I would never, ever allow an animal to make a guest of mine uncomfortable...and some people just dont understand that.
I agree. Whether or not the guests knew there were going to be dogs there, I don't understand why you would not just let the dog play in another room for a bit. Children (as well as adults) are afraid of a lot of different things and to try and rationalize a fear with someone is silly. Just seems a little immature to me - you're the adult in the situation.

I agree. You said the party was at your mom's - so would people even know to anticipate that a dog was going to be there???
You don't know everyone's history with dogs, so I wouldn't be so quick to judge.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
Just a taste of what I grew up with...
You get used to heads this big!
But I will add that when I was a little girl, I used to walk home from the bus stop. I had to walk about 5 minutes. One neighbor had 2 dogs, an irish setter kind of dog and a lab. The lab was wonderful. He'd come charging at me all excited. But the setter was another story. I remember freezing in the middle of the street, crying my eyes out because she charged at me with a lot of aggression. My neighbor came out and handled the dog and felt so bad that he promised he'd never let her out again without a leash. But had I not had a big dog around at home, I am sure that would have caused a lot more of a fear of dogs.
Sorry to ramble.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
I am only standoff-ish with Doberman Pinschers. One nearly tore off my face when I was 7 before leash laws were in effect and/or enforced. It was a pretty bad scene. Strangely enough, now, I am not afraid of other large dogs at all.
One never knows why people are frightened but when it comes to children, Id be very careful. They do not always have the impulse control to keep their hands to themselves regardless of how many times their parents tell them not to touch. And if an untrained dog gets his tail pulled, I wouldnt blame it for wanting to bite the person who pulls it.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
My nephew is terrified of dogs. He has never been bitten or had a very bad experience as far as I know, he just doesn't like them. My sister (his aunt) has a miniature poodle and he is even terrified of that dog, who is not a biter or scary. My sister puts the dog upstairs or boards him for the day if she is having the whole family over because she doesn't want him to be frightened. Fear is not always rational and exposing the child to the dog is not necessarily going to help him get over the fear.
I also think that if you are the host, you should be doing things to make your guests comfortable, not just expect them to deal with the dog or leave.
The other thing is that you said you were at your mom's house. Perhaps these people were not expecting your dog to be there, since you don't live there?

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
OK here is my TAKE on this...
My Dog is a BIG DOG. He is almost 80 pounds the friendliest dog you will ever MEET ( people on here have met him and will tell you that) He would never hurt anyone (well I shouldn't say that cause you never know....)
HE is a jumper. We yell at him tell him no Hold him and nothing works. He is A LOT stronger then me and when someone comes in NO matter who it is even me... He jumps on you. I push him down and say no but he is just excited. So its not that I am a dog person and just don't "understand" I DO understand I don't like it either but... I can't help it.
One day I was walking Rudy and the trainer we working with told us to have him SIT when he sees people so he learns thats what he has to do So I saw a couple walking their dog and I told him to sit till they passed WELL the lady PICKED up her dog as she got closer and wouldn't put him down until they were passed us. I HAVE TO ADMIT I WAS HURT! I said he isn't going to hurt him we are training him they were like oh ok... and kept going.
As far as the kids go maybe they had something tramatic happen

i shouldnt have to feel uncomfortable either. if you know ahead of time that you are attending someones house and they have dogs.... then you should be prepared for that
eta: like i said, i respect if someone is scared, but i feel it should be a mutual respect.
But wait you were at your moms house. Does she have a dog?

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
I had a 3 year old and a 4 year old at my house this weekend. We have a 97 pound black lab and they've met him before and been fine.
Well, this time the 3 year old had some issues. She was afraid of Brodie and was having a hard time being around him.
He got sent outside with a chewie for a little while until we got her used to him. And if she had never come around, we would have locked him in the bedroom or kept him out.
She wasn't intentionally snubbing my dog, she was afraid. And me forcing her to be around him would have probably made her fears worse.
I love my dog, but I wouldn't chose his feelings over that of a 3 year old child, especially one who was a guest in my house.

I agree with you... The only problem I have with Rudy is that he has serious seperation problems. I locked him a room once and he Ate my blinds and ate the wire to a lamp
He got locked in a room on accident He tried to dig under the door to get out and ripped up all the carpeting and when that didn't work he jumped through the window
SO thankfully my parents live in the same town. He gets sent there for cases like this

Oh, I'm not saying Brodie wouldn't cause some major damage!!
He's been known to be a one dog wrecking crew!! He's better now that he's almost 4 years old, but it was BAD when he was a puppy.
But even when he was outside, I sat with him for a little while to make him feel better. I would have done the same thing if we had to lock him up.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
i'm definitly afraid of dogs. i definitly don't like to be jumped on or licked. and my boys are scared of dogs too. yes it is irrational but i feel uncomfortable in someone else's house with a dog there, so i can totally understand how scared the children were. honestly though, like you said it was your house and you had every right to be there with YOUR dog so the mother should have left taking her kids with her. that's what i would have done.
