I agree with you... The only problem I have with Rudy is that he has serious seperation problems. I locked him a room once and he Ate my blinds and ate the wire to a lamp
He got locked in a room on accident He tried to dig under the door to get out and ripped up all the carpeting and when that didn't work he jumped through the window
SO thankfully my parents live in the same town. He gets sent there for cases like this
Exactly - but the point your making is that you would take your guests feelings into account and let Rudy visit grandma and grandpa!
Definetly... My dad called today to tell me that If I wanted to drop Rudy off when my company was over that I could but they got home at like 4 to late for my company
Don't worry - I'm sure your company loves Rudy
I hope SO

I know A LOT of people who are like that with Chihuahuas... They sometimes can be protective!

I also think that if you are the host, you should be doing things to make your guests comfortable, not just expect them to deal with the dog or leave.
I absolutely agree with this.
I LOVE dogs, but if I knew people were uncomfortable (whether I was the host or not) I would definitely put the dog somewhere else for the rest of the day. I would NEVER judge anyone for not liking my dog... everyone is different and you don't know everyone's history. JMO.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
I have a 45lb boxer who is a great dog. Roxy doesn't bark at all, she has never bite us in 3 years and loves to sleep but she does like to jump when people come into the house only if she knows you. If she doesnt know you she runs. My grandmother is extremly affraid of all dogs doesnt matter the size. She was bitten by a small dog when she was a child and never got over it. When she is over I tie her up and by that I mean I put the leash around the railing and she lays in the landing. That is her spot. I dont like locking her in room because she scratchs at everything because she can't see what is going on. If I know anyone who is going to come over is even only a little scared Roxy gets tied up. Also when my neices comes over Roxy is only released for little because she gets very excited around the girls and I dont want Roxy jumping on them. But once she is tied up the girls go upstairs and pet her and play with her. I think as a dog owner it is common curidisty to put a dog away if someone is scared regardless of the size or temper of the dog. I think it is silly to only be friends with people who like dogs because you could be missing out on some good people.

I agree. You said the party was at your mom's - so would people even know to anticipate that a dog was going to be there???

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
let me just clear up alittle bit.
i was visiting my moms house for my sisters birthday.... they always ASK me to bring a dog. (i mean, i would anyway, but point is they anticipate it)
my mom has dogs as well. she put them downstairs during the party because they dont do well with strangers. (Toby is protective and territorial and Jenna is a bytch quite frankly) i felt horrible for them, although i understnad some dogs need to be away form the crowd. i kept visiting tehm, and bringing them hotdogs and taking them out for walks and paying them attention since i knew they were not enjoying themselves.
secondly, i was imo VERY respectful to these two brats. i brought dharma in whenever asked to. (which im sorry, i still feel its rude to ask that of someone)
and if she was outside with us she was either on my lap, or on the deck in CLEAR vision. she never leaves my site. for everyones best interest.
point is, if she was walking in hte direction to the girl id call her and shed come sit on me.
point is, i made sure she was NOWHERE NEAR the girl. i mean like far away! (my mom has a big yard)
so, mrswasks comment about me being "immature" for not locking her up, im sorry but i must disagree, i think keeping a watchful eye on her and bringing her inside every so often is quite "mature". i think immature would be letting her run around like a lunatic.
if i was to leave my dog inside for the whole day i wouldnt have brought her in the first place.
i think i personally respected the people very much so. i think it was sort of the "give and inch theyll take a mile" type of a thing.
also, if i was scared of someones animal, say they had a dog i was scared of, i would never in a million years ask them to put their dog away. thats quite rude imo. i would just make sure to stay as far form it as possible.
(for example im very weary of Golden Retrievers because I was attacked by one as a child, ripped a chunk of flesh off my body and was in the hospital)

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
I am not but I do crate my dog when I have company other than the regular family which is not often. Sometimes I take her out after the kids are settled in and less rowdy. It's more for the dog and not the kids I understand there are people afraid of my 74 lb dog and I respect that. But if you are going to be at my house more than 2 hours she's coming out so sit back and hold on!!! She's a family member too....

i'm not a fan of dogs at all. i get nervous around any dog over the size of a poodle.
if you have guests over and they're uncomfortable, the polite thing is to put the dog in another part of the house. regardless of how "irrational" the guests are being, you want a guest to be comfortable. especially if it's a kid--you can't rationalize with little kids.
one of my good friends has a monstrous dog. although she's friendly, my friend knows i'm scared of her and she ALWAYS puts her in the yard or another section of the house when i'm over. it's very thoughtful of her and allows me to enjoy my visit. just because it's her house doesn't mean she should let the dog run all over when a guest is there.
next time that happens, i would consider putting the dog somewhere else and when the guests leave, let her run all over the place. but while they're there, take their feelings into consideration, especially with kids
I love dogs but I think you said this perfectly.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
i am petrified of big dogs, and not too fond of smaller dogs. i don't know why i am so afraid but i am. last year we went to a party and they had a pit bull roaming around and i froze and could not walk into the house. i did not know that they had a dog. thankfully the owners were friends of my husband and put the dog in a room away from me. i thought that was the nicest thing, and made me feel very comfortable.
sometimes it is hard to get over phobias. it is not about "good parenting" or just "dealing." if you have a true fear of dogs you will not get over it right then and there. it doesnt matter if its the sweetest dog in the world. for me, i just really am afraid. JMO.

I am only afraid of German Shepards...and that has to do with my childhood.
my childhood incident was with a cocker spaniel!
i was afraid of lil ppl *we do not use the "d word"* untill I was in HS and my dad bought one for us. I was forced to get over it fast...now I have lil Brooklyn and love him.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
well if they were at your house then they would have to deal. But IMO if you were elsewhere and the kids were afraid I would say you'd have to deal with the issue & take her elsewhere. Some kids are just really scared of animals. Maybe they can't help it.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
totally afraid of dogs. I was chased down by a dobie when I was young.
Weird thing is that I come from a dog family. I just avoided the dogs like the plague. i never felt comfortable around them.
If someone invited me to their house, and my kids were afraid of the dogs, I would leave. No one should sit at a party in fear.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
I am petrified of dogs and it takes a very long time for me to become comfortable around any dog. It has gotten better with age, but there are still some moments when I'm really not sure I can deal with the situation in front of me and I have to make myself be around them. With that said, I am an adult, I can control my fears and try to work through them. A child just does not have the capabilities to "get over it" or just "forget" their fears. Animals are BIG to children and they are not predictable (they jump, they bark, they lick, they run around) and that can be very scary for children. I expect when I am invited over somewhere for the host to make ME as comfortable as possible. If that means caging an animal or putting them in another room then so be it. I would especially think so if I had a child that was scared.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
I am a licensed veterinary technician and I've taken blood from the jugular of Rotties and pits with no fear at all.......to be completely honest, it's mostly the little dogs who are aggressive and try to bite -- yorkies, etc.......but, I'm not afraid of them at all, my assistant gets them in a pretty good headlock so they can't bite me.......
The only breed I am wary of are German Shepards....and it's weird because I grew up with one who was the most sweet and gentle dog in the world.....but now when a shep comes in and has that "funny look", I tend to take a step back....

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?
I'm not and when I have the space, I hope to get a dog.
I believe that when you invite someone to your home, your goal is to make them as comfortable as possible. I think that if a child is afraid of a dog and I am a guest at a birthday party, I would expect that dog to be put away, or I would leave. I had a cat and a lot of people don't like cats. I would always put her away in the bedroom if I had company over that was not comfortable.
With children, you can't expect them to face their fears. Even as a parent, I would never have Jordana face her fears with a dog I don't know. If Jordana was scared of dogs, I would put her around a dog that I trusted so that she coudl be more comfortable. But I wouldn't do this with a new dog. You just don't know when a dog will get spooked. Even if a dog owner says they are a gentle dog, you never know.
If it were me, and it was my sister's party at my mother's home (where my dogs don't reside), for the sake of my sister, I would put the dog away. It should be about your sister and her friends and having them be as comfortable as possible and having lots of fun!

if you know ahead of time that you are attending someones house and they have dogs.... then you should be prepared for that
Well, if this was at your parent's house & you brought your dog with you, then the guests may have not known. I have family members that avoid visiting certain people b/c of the dogs.
Is that better?
I never had any pets growing up & was afraid of cats, dogs, birds, even hamsters ( they grossed me out).
As an adult, I respect that other people view their pets as family, but I don't feel the need to pet them & such. I still fear the the licking.
With kids, if they are afraid, they are afraid. They haven't reached the point where they can just deal with it.
