Are you an organ donor?
My son was recently listed for a liver transplant and in doing so I've learned a lot about organ donation. I learned that New York has one of the lowest donation rates of 22% while the rest of the nation's average is 47%. So out of sheer curiosity are you a registered organ donor and if not, why? If you are comfortable saying the reason. Thanks!

Re: Are you an organ donor?
Ill answer first. Yes I recently registered. I was not up until recently because of the stigma that I would not receive the best care in the hospital should something happen to me.

Are you an organ donor?
Yes - believe very strongly that whatever of me can be used to help someone else when I'm gone should be.

Are you an organ donor?
I am, except for my eyes.
I made the decision back when I was probably 19 or 20...I see no need in being buried with something that serves no purpose to me anymore but could save someone else's' life.

Re: Are you an organ donor?
Absolutely.
If I die and my organs can go to help save other people, take them. I won't need them and there's no sense if them going to waste.
I am also someone who gives blood regularly and I am on the bone marrow registry.
I imagine how I would feel if I ever were in a situation where I needed an organ to survive. I would hope there are people out there who feel the way I do so there is hope.

I think some reasons why people do not register are:
1) Religious 2) Stigma mentioned above (about not receiving best care, your organs may be worth more than your life to hospital, etc.) 3) Lazy, ignorant, not enough awareness to it's importance... on the assumption that most people are presented with the application when first applying for a drivers license (I think at 16-18 in New York). This is a BIG decision, so I would guess most teenagers aren't ready to make it. 4) Maybe some irrational / superstitous fear around the issue - same reason people don't plan their own funeral or buy a plot in advance.

Are you an organ donor?
Yes!!!! Absolutely! My reasoning is that I am no longer alive, so why keep the parts? If it goes towards helping someone else or just for research... Either way, don't need em...

Are you an organ donor?
I ain't using any of my stuff when I'm dead.. enjoy it :) I want to be cremated.
Ironically I do worry that my heart, liver, etc would go to someone who would live their lives pushing against agendas I believe in, but then I realize WHY WOULD I CARE? I'm dead. Sometimes being an agnostic atheist has its benefits. no one will care when I'm gone. Those who do, will die too. Its the stories not the body that matters.
I am also a scientific study so I told the guys who research this stuff they can have at as well. Signed some of their documents. They just want blood, skin and hair samples anyway. I could do those while alive, just haven't found the time.

Are you an organ donor?
Thanks for all the responses! This whole thing with my son has made me think about a lot of stuff I never really thought about before as far as mortality and things like that. We're looking into either me or my husband being a living donor for him. Because he is fairly "healthy" for someone with liver disease his score is very low on the list and being the donation rate is so low in NY who knows how long he would have to wait or how much more sick he would have to get to be called for a transplant.

I am a donor and my DH is not because of this reason. He's convinced if something life threatening happened to him they won't do what they can to save him just to get his organs.
ETA...i hope your son is ok!

Re: Are you an organ donor?
Yes. My boyfriend recently donated a kidney to his father, and I am so proud of him for that sacrifice. I certainly can do it when I'm dead if he can do it while living.

A lot of people feel this way.
The only problem I have with organ donation - and this is from a registered organ donor, as I just posted above - is that I have personally seen doctors of patients with traumatic brain injuries try and steer them toward donation because "their quality of life" may not be perfect or what it once was.
Since my brother's head injury, I have worked with the doctor who's treatment has helped Kenneth recover miraculously. We were told Kenneth would never recover, we were told that we should consider "letting him go" so that others can benefit from his organs. And since his injury, his current doctor who has been so amazing has helped other patients and has told me heartbreaking stories of families being told that their loved ones may never recover, and then pressured to remove support and then donate because otherwise they are prolonging the patient's suffering, etc. It has been an awful thing for me to witness... because I know that MANY of these patients deemed "brain dead" or deemed "too far gone" can come back and recover... especially with the cutting edge treatments now available from some doctors --- doctors like the one who has treated Kenneth. His recovery is no coincidence! It's not just dumb luck. His treatment is state of the art.
I know that some of these brain injured patients may not be exactly the way they were before they were hurt - my brother still has to use a wheelchair sometimes and he has limitations but he is living a happy, joy-filled life watching his son grow up and spending time with all of us. It's not effortless and easy the way it was before he was hit by the drunk driver but he's THRILLED to be alive. I mean, thrilled.
Now, every single time I hear on the news that a person with a head injury was "removed from life support" I cringe to think that if they were allowed the chance to recover - they could have recovered like my brother or the hundreds of other people I have known with injuries like his, since he was hurt in '08. Even that high school student that was just killed playing football - they said he passed hours later at the hospital... and the father was even quoted in newsday saying that he was donating his organs. It just made me think, oh no... because of what I have seen in other cases. Of course, I have no way of knowing with each person if that's actually the case - but I have seen it first-hand in some cases and it's just a difficult thing that I would have never been aware of if Ken's injury didn't occur and I didn't form such a relationship with his doctor and then the patients he treats.
Again, I'm a registered organ donor and have been since I was seventeen. But the last few years have been an eye opener and concerning.

Re: Are you an organ donor?
I am not registered because of that Stigma and I can't bring myself to do so "just in case". Though, my DH and all family members have been instructed to donate everything. I won't need it where I'm going. I believe 100% in organ donation. DH, not so much. He still hasn't decided. I told him he better, because if left to me, I'm giving away everything!

I just want to say that this the first I am hearing of any stigma regarding organ donation. I never heard of doctors pushing families to donate organs before.
