in regards to food shopping?

Listening to the news this morning I had to laugh at their suggestions as I guess us poor folks have always done the things they said to do.

My food budget will stay the same and I will just be more frugal than I already am.

I am trying to bring lunch to work more often vs. eating out. Between inflation and gas prices now everything is getting to be a bit much.

I have always brought lunch or have gone home so that is not too much of a change but I know for many it is.

Limiting our spending to pretty much food and gas. Less take out. Resisting the urge to check my old navy/gap app. Keeping things in my amazon cart for a few days rather than pressing buy now.
Sucks when we already have some cc debt and this was the year I wanted to kill it.

Not really. Just trying to be less wasteful, especially with food.

Re: Are you changing your spending habits

I have been changing my spending habits for years. But now, I have gotten strict with gas, oil, and electricity.

I will walk more to the supermarket and I intend to use my bike more. At one time (for four years) all I had was my bike. I’m a little bit too dependent on my car for simple things like shopping.

I got really strict on heat since September. It is set on the lowest setting by the landlord and I think I turned it on 5-6 times this winter? It sucked when it was cold, but I had an extra down comforter to keep warm. I also have the added convenience that I am the middle floor and the walls here have great insulation. Downstairs uses a pellet stove a lot for heating and upstairs lets her heat go wild, so I get that as well.

I keep track of my electricity every month. I try my best not to use my dryer as much.

In lockdown, I went into cleanup mode with the rest of the world. I had so many clothes I cleaned out a lot. Now I rarely buy clothes and “shop my closet” first. I think last year I bought under 10 clothing items? I was a ridiculous shopper buying 2 of everything. It was not needed.

At the moment, I am going through all my bills carefully. I was paying 5 a month for a multi SIM card on my cell phone and I don’t even need it.

Food wise, I try to shop my pantry and freezer. I’ll try to find cans that need to be used up and make sure to make them. I have too many.

I don’t do extreme couponing or anything. I also try to sell things on FB marketplace. I do that for extra money and also because getting rid of certain things is such a pain here. You’d be surprised what people buy.

Heat is one thing I will not budge on. I am always cold and it has to be 70 all the time. We get automatic oil delivery and we are on balanced budget so we pay 12 months a year.

Yeah, I have to budge on it. I pay my share of heating (it is a separate bill here), and I like cold weather, so it doesn’t bother me. Plus it went up A LOT here. I planned ahead.

We have never been so happy to have invested in our pellet stove all those years ago.
We buy just 2 tanks of oil a year and currently my house is at 77 degress. Chat Icon

Same. We need what we need in the house so unfortunately, I'm just paying way more for everything.

My grocery bill has gone up around $100/wk for the same food we've always bought.

I have always used non named brands but even those have gone up. Luckily my one kid buys a lot of food for themselves as that saves me.

We pay $149 so I am pretty happy about that. Hoping it doesn’t go up too much what I get my new budget next month.

Does it keep the entire house warm or are some rooms still chilly?

Consider yourself very lucky to be able to have an extra $100 just sitting around to spend. Many have to go to food pantries as they have to decide to spend money on food or gas.

I stopped remote starting my truck because these gas prices are insane.

Everything else? I haven’t made many changes. I do understand that for us it’s a little easier because we don’t have kids. It’s just DH and I.

Don't ask a question if you don't want to hear the actual answer. Nell, along with others, have also said nothing has changed for them. Perhaps you missed her comment right above mine.

Don't get your panties in a bunch because there are those with more than you. Do you. Stop concerning yourself with what others have or don't have.

As usual, you're just looking for a drama filled fight. I'm not going to give it to you. Enjoy the weekend.

Oh I saw her comment. She as well as others said nothing has changed for them. They didn’t say how much more they are spending.

Wasn’t looking for a fight or drama actually but once again you brought it here trying to make me look jealous. I actually am quite proud of how much I can stretch my dollar. That is why it won’t affect me as much as others as I can live with less and get more for my money. I think I have more sometimes because I know how to be frugal.

Actually too busy to go back and forth as we have plans with friends for dinner so enjoy your weekend too.

I pay about ~90 a month. I have paid that from 2014. I usually get money back. I scaled back this winter because oil prices went through the roof. It complicated to explain how the heating works here.

I don’t have remote start, but some man yelled at me the other day for starting up my car and getting my phone ready to get maps to sync with it. To be fair, my car is 18 years old and he was complaining about the exhaust (I just had a new exhaust put in), but it was literally 3 mins. He signaled to me to turn off my car. I took time to get out of my car (car on) and ask him what the problem was. I just rolled my eyes and said I am going now.

That wasn’t the first time I had someone complain about my car being started for a few mins. The last time was a brand new car and she yelled at me to shut it off because of the environment. You literally cannot sit here 3 mins warming up without someone yelling at you.

Our house is small and open floor plan so it really warms up the entire living area.
If the bedroom doors are closed they get chilly but we have wall mounted electric heaters in them that use very little electricity to keep those areas warm.
We only use oil for hot water

Groceries have definitely gone up. But I’ve been using the butcher because you get much better prices on chicken. And we lucked out because we’re in the oil contract so our ceiling per gallon is relatively inexpensive and we’re locked in until next year

Yeah, if you can save money any way, it is good. We only have to heat our upstairs as the basement is unfinished and not heated.

Wow that is nuts. My remote start goes for 10 minutes and then turns off. My other one stayed on until I turned it off.
