Are you doing anything to prepare.....
over the summer?
I HAVE DONE NOTHING AND PLAN ON DOING NOTHING UNTIL THE WEEK BEFORE! (And by that, I mean I will be setting up my classroom!)
Does anyone actually plan anything over the summer? If you do, does it make things easier for you during the school year? I am willing to put in minimal effort if it means an easier school year. Just curious what others do.....or don't do

Re: Are you doing anything to prepare.....
Yes - I try to book as many college visits/trips as possible. I try to make sure that everyone's schedule is correct. I set up my files on each graduating senior. (I'm a guidance counselor, in case you couldn't tell). All this just makes September easier.

Re: Are you doing anything to prepare.....
Nope. I have to go through & organize my worksheets & lessons from this past year (by the end of the year they're always a total mess). But otherwise, I do nothing. They don't tell us what classes we're teaching until the first day back in Sept... so I can't plan anything before then anyway (very annoying).

Re: Are you doing anything to prepare.....
No. I'll take advantage of sales. I might read a few books to do some comp. questions/activities.
But not really anything until the end of august.

Re: Are you doing anything to prepare.....
Ok thanks ladies!
All I have done so far is shopped at the really good Staples sale But, I don't consider that really 'preparing'. Anyway, thanks for making me not feel the least bit guilty!

Re: Are you doing anything to prepare.....
All I have done is organized my notebook for the first unit (which means just making sure all the worksheets I put in there last year are in the correct order) and I wrote a very general plan for september (ie copy last year's plan book into this years with a few changes)

Re: Are you doing anything to prepare.....
This summer - yes. so I can spend more time after work with my dd instead of doing work.
I am looking through catalogues to see what posters or ideas I can make myself instead of spending $$$
I need to study more about the IB program my school is training for
I will set up labels, gradebooks, lesson plans and templates.
I also want to put together shoebox centers and other center activities for reading and math.

uhh - where do you work? I just want to know in case I have to move before my kid starts kindergarten. You can send me an FM if you don't want to post it.
I'm really serious!
is this an insult to her because she is not spending her summer preparing for her class, because as a teacher i find it insulting preparing over the summer is not an indication of how good a teacher you area i know plenty of teachers who do nothing all summer and are fabulous teachers, i hope you are not that judgemental of all your child's future teachers

Thanks! I honestly read that post and had NO clue what it was supposed to mean.
I am not going to sit here and type out reasons to justify how I know I am a great teacher. I just have to take a double take at that comment and at the ignorance.
Well, time to go watch more TV and play with my kitties!!

Sunnygirl I totally agree.... I was insulted for a moment as well.... then I realized a person would only say something rude & condescending like that if they're insecure themselves...
I don't do work over my vacation... I openly admit that... if that makes me a "bad" teacher, so be it!!!!
I have noticed from past posts that somebody is on her "teacher high horse" (if the person is a teacher at all... probably not)

I, too, am glad someone responded.
Whether or not, you prep over the summer does not determine if you are a good teacher.

There are arguments both ways
You can prepare a lot over the summer making you a better teacher...... or prehaps all that recuperation from the year before and thorough relaxation helps you to come in with a fresh head in the fall and ready to work! That how it is for me and it's part of what contributes to me being a great teacher I think the mental break is crucial!
But, for someone to come in and judge us for taking that mental break is just uncalled for

Re: Are you doing anything to prepare.....
I guess I'm a horrible teacher because I don't do much prep work over the summer.
I take the summers to relax and rejuvenate myself after a long, stressful year. I'm going into my 9th year of teaching, so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing or have to spend every second of my life prepping for the upcoming year.
PennyCat - enjoy your summer!

Re: Are you doing anything to prepare.....
i actually really agree with you i think every one is different some people need to just relax and decompress from the previous school year, and some people need to read up on new things, plan, organize, whatever just let us do what works for us, i don't judge people in other jobs, how do i know what you should be doing if i don't do your job

I never said that teachers were bad if they don't work over the summer. I'm sure you guys get that all the time, so I understand the confusion.
But I did have a problem with being so proud of doing the minimum. We call that lazy in my house. You don't try to get by in life... you do your best at everything.
ETA - it is a personal goal to teach my DC the value of pride in what you do for a living. IMO, someone who is looking to put in "minimal effort" (her words... not mine) will undermine the values I teach my DC at home. Maybe that's a district that doesn't suit my needs as a parent. I didn't mean to be offensive. Don't parents move to the districts that are in line with their personal values?? On the home board parents post about good and bad districts all the time.
But the OP didn't answer my question... if your so proud of the work you do then post your district....
As a teacher, I can certainly tell you that occasionally a district's values and philosophy do not completely align with those of the parents or teachers in the district.
So what does her district have to do with anything? You could have the most wonderful district with teachers who do no planning all summer long, and yet they are rated extremely high. The parents are happy.
On the other hand you could have a district that does not support its teachers through professional development and yet the teachers are planning and extremely effective in their job.
Her district has nothing to do with it.
Maybe you should teach your child the value of relaxing and reflecting on a YEAR of HARD WORK.

Sweetie, I’m sorry the values my district has to offer do not meet your high standards. I actually do have immense pride in myself as a teacher- from September to June! Over the summer I have pride in my ability to relax and separate myself from the classroom I work so hard in all year long. It’s because of my ‘minimal effort’ over the summer that I have the stamina to work so hard during the school year, often staying in my classroom well past 5pm several days each week preparing lessons, decorating bulletin boards, and grading papers. I would have time to do those things during my lunch period, but I often spend that time giving students extra help on reading or math. Welcome to the “effortless” life of a school teacher.
I have to say, your kid would be lucky to have a teacher like me. I am a very loving, caring, creative teacher who cares deeply about each one of my students and their families.
