What is redshirting? I've never heard this term...

Re: Are you redshirting your 4 or 5 year old DC for kindergarten?
Live in Texas and the cutoff is different here it's September 1st. Since my DD was born in NY at the end of August I had never even thought I would have to make this decision but when she was 3yrs old her preschool approached me about keeping her in the 3yr old class again (as a 4yr old) putting her at 6 yrs old when she starts kindergarten. Academics is not the issue which I'm baffled that many of you have used that as your reasoning. While my daughter is very sociable she was highly immature. Being a bit of a bossy (her teachers put it kindly as being a "leader")girl and being the youngest didn't mix well as older kids were not about to follow her lead. I didn't like the idea at first but I went with their advice and had her "repeat" nursery school She is now 5 yrs old and in pre-k and has done quite a bit of maturing. Academically she is bored in school as she knows her letters and numbers like the back of her hand so I took the initiative to start teaching her how to read so she will have that advanatage when she starts kindergarten. If I made the wrong decision then the worst that can happen is that she skips a year in the future. I think that's much less damaging then having to hold her back when she's able to understand what's going on.
On a side note I would like to mention that I was a late November baby and started kindergarten when I was 4. I did do well in school, a shy kid but I had my friends. Anyway I graduated h.s when I was 17 and didn't feel ready for college but went anyway only to drop out and finish at a later period. Perhaps another year in school would have "matured" me who knows but at this point in my life it wouldn't have made any significance if I had graduated a year later. I say what's the rush?

I was sent into K when I was 4 and I was ready. My son? Absolutely not. He is so not ready. So I would say it depends on the child.

My DS's bday is 10/14 but he was born 7 weeks early (due date 12/2) the cut off for our district is 12/1. I have already said (even though DS is only 17 months right now) that if I feel that he is not ready then I want to keep him back a year.
When my brother was younger (early 90's) my mom expressed to the school that she felt he should be held back because of his ADHD and behavior issues and the district ignored her. Unfortunately when he hit middle school he was left back and it hit him very hard. Then in high school he had to be pulled out and put in an alternative BOCES high school because of his behavior. His bday is 10/4. Things back then weren't the same as they are now though.
My twin boys were born 10/29 with a due date of 12/7. The past couple of weeks I have been on the fence about sending them to K in September at 4 years old but I have decided to hold them back. They need another year to mature and it has been recommended by the pre-k teacher to do so. They also have speech and OT delays.

Re: Are you redshirting your 4 or 5 year old DC for kindergarten?
I answered your poll even though my son is already in k . He is a mid-September Birthday (cut off here is Oct 1). He is a FULL YEAR younger than some of the kids who were redshirted but we felt he was ready for K. He was a little immature at the beginning of the year but caught up very quickly. I never wanted to make MY SON feel like I didn't think he could handle it, KWIM? I want him to know that he can do anything he puts his mind into, including pushing himself in school. As an aside, when I grew up, the cut off was December 31. A mid-September birthday wouldn't have even have been an issue. The way I looked at it was, when he is in Harvard (wink, wink), the fact that he was still 4 for a week when he started K won't be an issue

My son will turn 5 in mid-November 2014 -- we plan on following our school district's schedule for cut-off (Dec) and basing the decision on his evaluation the previous February.

Re: Are you redshirting your 4 or 5 year old DC for kindergarten?
I feel like a party of 1 in the universe right now!
I am not, and would not redshirt my DD. On the contrary, since we're on Staten Island and the Board of Ed's cut off is December 31, I was going to try and push my DD ahead because she has a January birthday and I was afraid she'll be bored. Academically she's 100% ready. Her maturity is another question, although I can't get over the changes I'm seeing in her since her birthday this year.
As it worked out, the school I'm sending her in the fall to does not push kids ahead (and I suspect they frown on redshirting as well) so she'll be in pre-k again next year and will turn 6 while she's in kindergarden (which just seems wrong to me since I'm an October birthday, but that's just in my head).

DS b-day is 10/3, and the cut off is Dec 1. We've been on the fence also, since ds is getting OT and speech therapy, bu is doing great. I don't want to keep him behind. I registered him for kindergarden already, and I have cpse meeting the end of this month and will see how everything goes
