Re: Are you wearing your black today?...Jena 6
There is a lot of information that has been left out of the press. I have followed this story from the beginning. And yes I am wearing black today. I do not want the kids to go free but I am wearing black because of the inequality amongst the other students that were involved.
The students black and white had been fighting each other for weeks. None of the white students were arrested and charged with ANYTHING let alone attempted murder.
The students that hung the noose were originally expelled but the superintendent over turned it and called it teenage banter and sent them back to school.
Now I DO NOT condone fighting AT ALL. I DO think the black kids could and should be punished, but I do not think they should get life in prison for beating up a kid who was able to go to a party the same night he was beat unconscious.

Quick question, why do we have to wear black if this isn't a "black or white thing"?
I know nothing of the wear black thing and tend not to participate in those sorts of things anyway.
My answer, given that, is that you don't have to wear anything you don't want to wear!

I don't think kids who fit this description beat another kid until he is bloody and unconscious.
I find the hanging of the nooses disgusting and racist, but if they can't find a way to charge those kids under the law, they can't charge them. I also don't equate making a racist statement like that with a gang of kids beating someone like that.
It's probably getting exposure now because Sharpton got involved.
ITA. I wouldn't call them average teenagers if they beat another student enough to render him unconscious. It could easily have been much more serious with the head trauma.

While I dont know much about this case, so I cannot comment on it fairly, I think these rallies and marches are just to cause trouble.
My brother goes to school in that area and my dh has been working there. They both said that all they heard was comments against white people. Racial slurs against white people and they even yelled things at my brother for being "so white." So what does this do? What does this prove? Absolutely nothing but the risk of riots starting. It makes me REALLY ANGRY!

OMG...that is so weird.
My son is in Kindergarten and every day they have to wear a specified color to correspond with the color being reviewed in class that day.
Guess what today's color is?

And, what happend to the kids who beat up the black kid?
What case are you referring to?
I think I read somewhere that a black kid was beaten up after (or at) a party by white kids. ANd the white kid that was beaten boasted about it before HE was beaten up. I'll have to find that in one of the articles.
Also paired with these events, you have to admit something isn't right:
From the Daily Advisor, a LA newspaper.
A black student was beaten at a social function, and no one was charged. The DA goes into a hastily-called assembly and, looking directly at the African-American students, warns them that he can end their life with the stroke of his pen.
A white graduate pulls a gun on three black students who take the gun away and no charges are brought against the white grad, but the students were charged with theft when they didn't give the gun back.

Re: Are you wearing your black today?...Jena 6
Since some of you don't know about this case............racial incidents had been happening in Jena, Lousiana for weeks. It started with nooses (painted in school colors) hanging from a tree that was a gathering spot for "only" white kids. In September 2006 nooses were hung AFTER a black kid sat under the tree (after asking permission from school officials to sit under the tree). The white kids responsible for the nooses were allowed back in school. They had been suspended but that was overturned by school officals as "a prank".
Later, a Black teen was beaten up by white students at a party. NOBODY WAS ARRESTED. A separate incident happened soon after. A white man pointed a gun at black kids at a convenience store. The kids took his gun and no shots were fired. The KIDS were arrested and not the gunman!!
Days later a white kid was beaten up at another party after taunting the black teen who was beaten up at a party days earlier. The white kid was not beaten into unconsciousness. He had facial cuts and bruises and went to a party later that night.
The black teens were arrested for attempted murder!!!

Re: Are you wearing your black today?...Jena 6
Sounds like the entire school is just out of control, MrsT! Thanks for filling in some of the (horrendous) blanks in the story.
How tragic that the school didn't even attempt to step before it started escalating to violence -- or heck, before it even got to the place where there so seriously divided on racial grounds to begin with.
I didn't realize there had been violence going on for a while...

Is this the same one that the Associated Press claims was unconscious? If so, it IS horrible that the Associated Press is printing misinformation about this case...
"The beating victim, Justin Barker, was knocked unconscious, his face badly swollen and bloodied,"

I read he was knocked unscious, taken to the hospital, released, and then later went to a party - all of which is feasible.

Yeah, something like he could end their lives with the stroke of a pen....and I think this was said at an assembly.

I'm sure it seemed that if he was looking at them while making that comment, it would seem it was directed AT them.

The press prints TONS of misinformation so I am never surprised.
However, I have not read that the kid was unconscious but it is possible that he lost consciousness and was still later able to go to a party. Maybe the AP has it right this time? But what I do know is that nobody was charged when the black kid was beaten up days earlier.

Your right... saying it is one thing.(although we can get a GENERAL idea of who the statement was explicitly for) But making it real is another. He turned around and filed an attempted murder charge against students that were involved in a fight.
