aren't "designer" breeds just a fancy name for
mutts? All of these breeds people pay hundreds of dollars for (or more) a few years ago would have been just your ordinary "mutt."
Or am I wrong about this?

I agree 100%- my brother bought a half weiner dog half chawawa (spelling)
and paid a fourtune for what my DH calls a mistake 
but who knows what kind of health problems this poor guy is going to have- I feel bad for him- he is so oddly shaped

Yes and No...there are some designer breeds that have been around for a long time and are aiming for recognition from the AKC.
Some are bred for specific reasons, such as allergies etc.
The problem is that with all the new designer breeds there is no real way of knowing what personality traits are going to come out and there tends to be inbreeding to get the dogs to stay the same appearance wise.

Yeah this subject bothers me. For the longest time Pug and Beagle mixes were up for adoption everywhere, like on petfinder, etc. Then all of a sudden they become puggles, and are being sold in the pet store for at least $500!!! Its ridiculous!! And there were no papers to show that they were from pure breeds. So when they are mutts like that, it really bothers me that they sell them for so much $$.
I wouldn't get them from the pet store anyway, but to me these dogs are mutts and if I look hard enough, I can get them free from a shelter (or a small fee).

I would say yes - but I know Labradoddles and Goldendoodles are now being used by the Guide Dog FOundation for those people who need therapy dogs but have allergies to fur. It makes sense in these instances... but otherwise yes, they seem pretty silly to me...and a bit of a rip-off.

i love mutts, but i cant stand when people will argue that their dog is a "puggle" or whateverdoodle.... it is a mutt. and that is that. when AKC recognizes it as a breed, then so will i, but they dont, so stop calling it a breed!

you are correct.
AND breeders of "designer dogs" are Back Yard breeders or Puppy mills. So much better for everyone (us & the animals) to adopt mixed breeds.

you are correct.
AND breeders of "designer dogs" are Back Yard breeders or Puppy mills. So much better for everyone (us & the animals) to adopt mixed breeds.
yup. i found out that one of my dogs is a "schnoodle" and was probably bred in a puppy mill and bought for tons of money in a store... and then abandoned, which is how he ended up as my pet from the shelter!
when i adopted him all i thought was that i was getting a (VERY cute) mutt... i actually had no idea that these dogs were bred on purpose...

I have a "puggle" and I didn't' buy him because he was a "designer dog" I bought him because he was cute. It isn't his fault that he is a product of puppy mills and such. Does he not deserve a home because of this? I understand not promoting puppy stores but these are living animals that deserve a home too.

Someone else brought up the puppy mill thing and buying dogs. I didn't mean to be rude. It is just that I have had to defend having him over and over again even to strangers on the street because he was bought at a pet store. He is by definition a mutt, but a very cute mutt. My other dog is a rottie-chow mix that I got at NSAL. We call him a chowweiler.

because you made a very bad judgement call for buying through a petshop.
if you choose do support such a disgusting sad industry be prepared for some flaming. whether it be here or on the street.
if you wanted a pug beagle mix you could have found a "cute" one on petfinder or in your local shelter.
theres never an excuse for buying a dog from a petshop. ever.
now back to your regular scheduled thread.

There is flaming on both sides, even if it does not happen on this site. There are people who think that buying their dogs from fancy breeders or even at pet shops is a sign of wealth and they frown upon someone like me, who took a dog for free and didn't know how he was treated before. Of course, I don't really consider him to have been totally free because all dogs come with expenses.

You can't blame people for being passionate about cruelty to animals. As is said all the time here, its not that pet store animals do not deserve homes, its that by buying dogs from a pet store, one is supporting the atrocities that happen to get those dogs into the store. The only way to break the cycle is for people to stop going into these places and buying dogs from them. Some who are passionate about this subject can go a little overboard, but you have to understand its all in the best interest of animals. I do hope you have learned from here and other people that puppy mills are awful things and that in the future you would never buy another dog from a pet store.
My question though was weather a mixed breed like a puggle was a real breed or a "mutt," and how did they become "designer" breeds.

i have a maltipoo - when people ask me what she is, i say "half maltese, half poodle" why would i respond with "mutt"?
i don't really care whether she's a mutt or a "designer". why should you?

Because people are charging pure breed prices for dogs that not purebreeds. And once upon a time, these mixed dogs were adoptable, and now they are mainly available from "breeders" of these "designer breeds" for exorbitant prices (and sometimes bred in very poor conditions). That's just one reason.

I don't really care what you call your dog, its the fact that when they are no longer called mutts, but "designer" that they become highly desirable and then are bred in horrid conditions.

There are many reasons people buy "designer" breeds. I bought my yorkiepoo (who I ALWAYS refer to as a yorkie/poodle mix because it sounds less ridiculous) because I have very bad allergies and could only have a small dog that could live happily in an apartment in the city. We paid a lot for her, but it was necessary if we wanted to have a dog. It isn't as easy as you are making it to just go to a shelter and adopt a dog (especially in NYC). I tried several times and was turned down because neither I nor my husband are home all day. It is also near impossible to get a small dog from a shelter, I tried for over a year! All that being said, Kira, my dog lives a very charmed life with us and we are obsessed with her regardless of her breeding or where she came from.

We went into the store one day saw a cute puppy and brought him home. It wasn't planned and as mentioned before my other dog is from NSAL. Those dogs who aren't bought are euthinised if not sold. So if it was a bad judgement call so be it but he is ALIVE living a very nice life.
