There is flaming on both sides, even if it does not happen on this site. There are people who think that buying their dogs from fancy breeders or even at pet shops is a sign of wealth and they frown upon someone like me, who took a dog for free and didn't know how he was treated before. Of course, I don't really consider him to have been totally free because all dogs come with expenses.
Thats crazy!! People have given you crap because you adopted Oscar??
Some have, yes. Others have implied the attitude without saying anything specifically about Oscar. They just brag on about their dogs, perhaps about their bloodlines or about the price. But of course I have a lot of pro-rescue friends, too and some friends who don't need to use their dogs as a way to keep up with the Joneses.

Someone else brought up the puppy mill thing and buying dogs. I didn't mean to be rude. It is just that I have had to defend having him over and over again even to strangers on the street because he was bought at a pet store. He is by definition a mutt, but a very cute mutt. My other dog is a rottie-chow mix that I got at NSAL. We call him a chowweiler.
I agree!!!! I have two puggles and bought both. I fell in love with my oldest one because she was so cute. I then went on petfinder to get another puggle for her (she needed some companionship). I got chosen to adopt this puggle but he was just too much to handle. Way to hyper and at the time we didnt have a yard for him to run around in. So we opted not to adopt. So we bought another puggle for her and it has worked out wonderful.
These "backyard", "puppymill" dogs need homes too. I feel bad for every dog that is stuck in a cage with no one to love them. If I could i would adopt or buy tons of dogs and give them a good home. Everyone has different opinions. Some people on this board make others feel so bad if they actually buy a dog from a BYB. Its not fair to us!!!

I don't think people try to make others feel bad; some people on this board are very passionate about the subject. I think the point is that buying from puppy mills, BYB, or pet stores helps continue the torture of these poor animals, and that is a fact.

You're right and I agree. I just think that the people that did buy their dogs from these places feel they really cant come on this pets board because they might get attack in some way. I used to always post here but now i shy away from it. JMO. Im not trying to start anything, because I never have on these boards. I love LIF and I never want to start problems because its not me. Please dont flame. I just finally got the courage to express my feeling.

I think that we all agree that puppy mills are horrible and that is why they should be stopped. However it is not fair to the puppies that are already born from them to not have a fair chance at life because of where they came from. It is obvioulsy a cycle that needs to come to an end but it should be at the mills, not at places where puppies deseve a chance too.

I think that we all agree that puppy mills are horrible and that is why they should be stopped. However it is not fair to the puppies that are already born from them to not have a fair chance at life because of where they came from. It is obvioulsy a cycle that needs to come to an end but it should be at the mills, not at places where puppies deseve a chance too.
agree. but how do you stop the puppy mills if you (and I am talking you in general, not you specifically) keep supporting them by buying dogs that come from them.

And I think that is the key point! My heart breaks for all the dogs that come out of puppy mills, and of course they deserve a wonderful life. But the second you go to a pet store and buy one, you just supported puppy mills.

I dont think you were flaming me. I was just saying that generally speaking. Sometimes these boards get so heated its nuts. You are right it is your opinion and i do agree somewhat with it. But when you go into these puppy stores some people (like me) get so upset seeing these poor little dogs that just want some loving and it breaks peoples hearts, like mine. I would defintely adopt/save also. I also feel horrible about that situtation too. I have been to many shelters to look at dogs but never found one that suited my lifestyle at that moment. to you also.

This is true...and I have gone into stores selling puppies and want to buy one too.
The key is to NOT shop in these stores at all! If they don't sell anything - including food, leashes, etc. They will go out of business and maybe, just maybe, slowly put the puppymills out of business.
BTW, I don't think anyone should not post here cuz they got their dog at a petstore. It doesn't have to be mentioned everytime you discuss your dog.
Misty was bought at a pet store before we got her also...but, she's a perfect example of someone buying a dog they know nothing about cuz it's cute and then having the dog be too much for them.
Really, it's about education. Yes, some dogs are pet store dogs or puppy mill dogs, but that doesn't mean we should continue the cycle.
The key is to let people know NOT to do it in the future.

I was saying that I agree that this board gets heated to the point where some people don't post (people who got their pets in shops, mostly). That is sad. I do wish that some of the people who got their dogs from pet shops would at least say that they will consider other options for future pets. However, I do not think that I have pushed my opinion to the point where I have been responsible for people leaving this board. I want to talk to anyone who has a fun pet that they love.

I understand what you are saying. I don't plan on stepping for in a pet store ever again because I know I would walk out with a puppy because I feel so bad for them. I have grown up with dogs my entire life and with the exception of Henry all the others have come from NSAL and breeders. If I could (or DH would allow it) I'd have animals all over my house because I hate to see any puppy in a cage, whether it be in a pet store or a shelter.

i love mutts, but i cant stand when people will argue that their dog is a "puggle" or whateverdoodle.... it is a mutt. and that is that. when AKC recognizes it as a breed, then so will i, but they dont, so stop calling it a breed!
I agree Jess...plus I think many things can happen in the line of genetics when mixing breeds like that
