Report of a possible gun on campus.
University Police received a report that a young male fled the Student Activity Center Cafeteria and later displayed what was reported as a handgun. The individual was reported to be an African American male, approximately 25 years of age, wearing a black coat and black wool hat. He fled in the direction of Harriman Hall. University Police are searching the area and investigating the report. Remain alert, proceed with caution and notify University Police if you see anyone fitting the description of the individual or anything unusual. You can reach University Police by callling 911 from any campus phone or 632-3333.

Stony Brook University Police have issued a warning over the SB Alert system that "a black man in a black coat" has been spotted on the academic mall with a firearm.
The suspect is now reported to be approximately 25 years of age. He fled the SAC cafeteria in the direction of Harriman Hall and displayed what is now assumed to be a handgun.
Students have been advised not to leave whatever room they are in until the situation has been resolved. In addition, there are reports of police not letting anyone new into academic buildings from the outside.

That's so scary... this is getting ridiculous, it seems like every day there is a different campus on lockdown b/c of a gunman.

So am I. We have WUSB on. Unfortunately, they aren't much help.
We never got an alert.  We got an email from another department on the other side of campus about it.
It took forever for any information to be put on the website.

I think you need to put your cell number into solar. Then you will get texts and calls about stuff like this. I got the text probably 40 mins before the actual e-mail went out. There is definately a break down in the communication system for this issue.

I know. In fact, I was talking to my boss about it. We are not technically employees (we are considered "affiliates") and we constantly have trouble getting anything official done (i.e., parking passes, etc.)

I'm surprised that they didn't do a "broadcast message" through the campus phone system. We've gotten those types of things before (when the phone system was going to be down for upgrades).
Either way, 40 minutes is way too long for a message to be posted on the website, especially since the text message went out so fast.
