ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
So, my doctor doesn't do sonograms in house, she sends me to a perinatology office. I have had two prior (the ultrascreen and the level II/antomy scan) and now I have to have a growth sonogram.
I am kind of nervous and upset about the situation, so I emailed my boss on Wednesday night saying that I have to schedule this appointment and I *may* need time off or to come in late b/c the office doesn't have early morning or late night hours. She actually writes me back that "No, you cannot take company time to take this test, it has to be taken on your own time and you cannot take any sick or vacation days prior to your maternity leave starting on April 20th"
So, I call yesterday and get an appointment for 8:15am, if everything goes smoothly, I will be here WELL before 10am (office opens at 9am). But I don't get it, in the initial email I expressed my concern about having to have this test, how it was not voluntary and how I have had roughly 20 doctor's appointments, two sonos and two glucose screenings and I have only been late to work TWICE for the sonos! And I HAVE the friggen time to take off and I am not allowed??

How ridiculous!!!
Do you qualify for FMLA? If so, you can choose to use however many days you want during your pregnancy for medical care, but it counts against the total time off (i.e. 12 weeks).

Nope. We have 6 employees, not even CLOSE to qualifying for FMLA.
I think that is what stinks about working for a small office, they really try to just get away with whatever they want to do.
Yesterday I was telling DH that I should tell them that I have to go for this growth sono b/c is measuring small b/c I work in an unsafe and illegal work environment (my boss smokes cigars continuously throughout the day) that they chose not to deal with.

Ugh! How gross!
I work in a small office too, we have about 15 employees, but for some reason they included the FMLA policies in our handbook and seem to think they have to offer it to the employees. I'm not complaining about it though!

For working in a plaintiff's firm I would think they would be afraid you would sue them if something does go wrong.
That is ridiculous that they do that to you ((((HUGS)))))

Re: ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
Have they ever allowed anyone to take time off/come in late b/c of a doctor's appointment? If so (and I'm sure they have), they have to treat you the same way. Otherwise, you could sue them for pregnancy discrimination. You work for a law firm, right? It surprises me when law firms have no regard for the law.
Are you planning on returning after your baby is born? I hope you find a job that treats you better.

Re: ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
Did you decide what to do?
I would just tell her its mandatory.
OR...say well its this or I go on disability now...so whats better for YOU...me being one hour late or off for the next few months?

Re: ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
WHAT??? they can't do that! How many employees are there in your company? If you have a medical note saying you need this done, i don't think your boss can do jack about it - that makes me mad. She can't dictate when you can or can't use your sick time! She sounds like a piece of work. I'd get a doctor's note EVERY time you see the doc and have Personnel keep it in your file. They can't discriminate against you because you're pregnant!
eta: sorry i didn't see your reply. Maybe its the "lateness" they dont want. How about telling them "I will be using a half sick day on this date for a medical procedure and i'll be sure to give you a doctor's note a proof".

We have 6 employees and no HR or personnel department.
I am sure they wanted to fire me when I said I was pg, so THEY wouldn't have to "deal" with it, but they figured I'd sue (which I would). I am GOOD at my job, but they feel betrayed that I am having a baby.
There are deeper issues with my boss too, she hates that I am pregnant for many reasons and my assistant and the other attorney here both told me they see it too, so at least I am not nuts!

Re: ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
Do you have an HR or Personnel dept? Tha is ridiculous They cannot tell you when and for what you use your sick/vacation leave for. I would definetely go to your test and if you come in late you come in late. As far as I am concerned, they are discriminating against you b/c you are pregnant. Even though you are a small company and may not have an HR dept., you can definetely elevate this if this continues.

Oh my god - I cannot believe how rude and obnoxious your boss is - not to mention stupid - She actually put this in PRINT????????
I would definitely go with your plan about telling her its a mandatory test due to the smoke in the office.
I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.

Re: ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
They definitely cannot do that to you! I'm sure other people in the office get sick and call in sick and also have to go to the doctor during business hours. If I were you I would call in sick and say you have the flu or pink eye or something the day of your appt.

Re: ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
That is not only ridiculous, it is mean! I had to apply for FMLA, which was a job in itself, it took many trips to the dr with paperwork that MetLife kept denyiny. My company makes the paperwork so hard b/c they figure if its hard enough, you will give up and just come to work. It was worth it in the end Sorry you are having so many problems

Re: ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
Does your boss have a boss, or is that the end of the road? If your boss has a boss, print them email and go above his/her head. That is absolutely ridiculous. If you were really sick, you absolutely CAN take your sick days before your maternity leave.
You tried to be honest and she threw it in your face...I say from now on just call in sick if you need to do these tests.
Sorry your boss is so mean

That is soooo inconsiderate of your boss! I don't understand how this is supposed to want to motivate you to be loyal and dedicated to your company when your boss is such a jerk. And people wonder why our generation keeps jumping from company to company-- b/c the bosses are horrible!!!!

Re: ARRGGHHHH!I really hate my job-VENT
That is not right and so incredibly rude of your boss. You are talking about being an hour late to go to the Doctor. Tell them it is a mandatory test and that is the only time they have available. You can always work through lunch or work an hour later to make up the time.
I can't believe how rude and inconsiderate people can be in the work place. Your boss should be reported!
Good Luck and keep us posted.

That's ridiculous. I would talk to HR. If you have the time, she cannot tell you you "can't" take it.
