As of 9am, I am now on maternity leave

I bearly turned on my laptop this morning, to get a phone call from the President of the Chicago office. When I saw his name on the caller ID I knew exactly what was going to happen. I was prepared to hear the words for a 3rd time since graduating college, "Unfortunately we need to eliminate your position."

I not mad about being laid off bc I was hoping not to return after having the baby. I had already taken my personal stuff home and cleared my personal stuff off the computer. I'm just pi$$ed that I've been laid off from every job I've had.

The bright side of all this is, I wasn't expecting to get paid during maternity leave so at least now I'll be able to collect unemployment. Now, I can get the house in order to prepare for the baby's arrival.

You have such a way of looking at it. Although it still stinks. How much longer do you have until your bundle of joy arrives? Have fun with unemployment!!

Sorry to hear of the lay off, but maybe it is a blessing in disguise so you can collect unemployment and relax before the baby comes

Re: As of 9am, I am now on maternity leave

I am HOPING that my job decides to lay me off while out so I can collect unemployment. I am not returning to my job either. But I can see how you can be upset and hurt, b/c you have gotten laid off before. But at least now you can collect unemployment which is an added bonus.

Re: As of 9am, I am now on maternity leave

It does turn out better financially in the long run since anytime I took off would have been unpaid....I'll be 36 weeks on Sat. The Dr. already told me that she won't let me go past my due date of March 24th.

I haven't told DH yet.... I'll just wait til he gets home, no need to ruin his day.

Can they legally let you go before you were ready to go? I know it's probably for the better, but what's the deal with that?

Wow.... while I know it works out good for you, I am shocked that they would lay you off. If I was them, I would be scared to get a lawsuit for laying off a PG worker.

I think it's a blessing in disguise. You get to relax and finish up with the baby stuff. You'll be glad to have this time off before the baby comes. Enjoy it!

I think thats why they did it before she left - this way it has nothing to do with her having a baby or going on maternity leave - once she leaves, according to FMLA, they HAVE to hold her position for her - so they decided to do it now, so there is nothing illegal about it. I personally think its a horrible thing to do, and not to get too much of a feminist on this, I wonder if they would have "eliminated your position" if you were a man that had to go in for a surgery and take time off.... BUT, it sounds like you are not too unhappy with the turn of events, so I guess everything happens for a reason....

Would you believe that this is the second time I've been laid off while I was pg? I was laid off with Nate when I was 5 months pg.

I wasn't eligible for FMLA bc I was going on maternity leave 4 weeks before my 1 year anniversary.

Earlier this week, they lost an account which I was an account exec on so those are the "budget" issues they mentioned when they told me. When the account supervisor on the account told me that they lost it, I wondered how it would affect me for a split second but I didn't say anything.

Oh well, their loss.... I already got an email from my supervisor asking me for a status on my other clients. If they were smart they would have waited a week or two until I documented processes and project statuses for my other clients. I was planning to do that for whoever was going to cover for me.

As of now... DO NOT give them anything such as advise, status on your job. You are laid off. That was their decision. I would not help them whatsoever.... unless they want to pay you as a consultant, you are no longer working for them. Let your supervisor/boss figure it out.
