asbestos shingles...
We are starting to get quotes to have the house resided and some contracters are giving us quotes with ripping down to the asbestos shingles saying that is the way to go and others are giving us quotes for ripping it all down to the wood (which sounds better to me). Which way is the right way to do it? and does it make a difference? The pricing so far is all in the same ballpark area (give or take $1500) and we have some more estimates lined up for the next few days but I was just wondering what the deal is with removing the asbestos?

Re: asbestos shingles...
Do you have siding over your shingles? I always thought you have plywood walls, tar paper/vapor barrier, then one layer of siding. I would think that if you have shingles on your walls, they would need to come down before you put anything else up.

It seems like on the side we have the asbestos shingles covered with white aluminum siding, and in the front I am not sure what is under there...I know the top layer is aluminum green and there is also blue under that. I would think it all has to come down but some say the front will all come down and then sides down to the asbestos shingles and the insulation and vinyl goes right over them....everyone has a different story.

Re: asbestos shingles...
We have asbestos shingles on 3 of our 4 exterior walls and have found with redoing certain rooms in our house and having to replace windows that alot of the sheathing underneath our siidng is in bad shape. This being said the best thing I think to do is have them removed and start from scratch because if there are problems with teh plywood underneath you may never know and it might creat a problem later on. I think the asbestos shingles are hideious and I can't wait to get rid of them all.

Re: asbestos shingles...
I think the issue is with removal of the asbestos shingles. Since they are considered hazardous materials, they should be handled and disposed of properly and that gets expensive. I think there are contractors that will do it without going through the proper channels and charge you less, but personally, I don't think I would go this route. I would just rip down tot he asbestos shingles and put the siding right over them, without disturbing them at all.

Re: asbestos shingles...
We sided over ours. If the companies you're using aren't licensed to remove asbestos, the town could stop your job in progress and you'd have to hire someone who IS licensed to do it, or do it yourself (I know someone this happened to).

Re: asbestos shingles...
If you are getting quotes for 1500 to remove the shingles odds are they are not going to removed them as per the hazardous materials codes. We were quoted the same thing but were also told by other companies who quoted more that they were more expensive because of the permits involved and the special disposal.
In the end we just went over it and have not had any problems.
