Quick help - infant around someone with Shingles? or what about prego mom?
my MIL is on her way here and *may* have shingles (waiting for results.) I'm concerned that DD is only 13 months and sick - could it be dangerous for her if my MIL does in fact have shingles?
Is there any danger for me being prego? I had the chickenpox when I was younger.

I wouldn't chance it - has your DD had the chicken pox vaccine? Even if she has, these things aren't foolproof and if your DD is sick to begin with, her immune system is weakened.

That's what I was thinking. DH however can not deprive his mom of a visit

Re: Quick help - infant around someone with Shingles
When my DD was only 2 wks old my cousin stopped by the house for a visit...she found out the next day she had shingles. Of course we freaked out...she hadn't touched or held the baby, but we still were scared.
Our Ped said as long as the baby didn't come in direct physical contact with the infected area of the person with shingles, she'd be fine. And she was!
Still...all that being said, if we had known ahead of time that my cousin had shingles, we would asked her to come another time.
Who needs another thing to worry about with a newborn?!

she would need to touch it.. if MIL covers it up it won't be a problem at all.

It shouldn't be a problem, and I say that only because I experienced it with my MIL when my son was born. She came to visit us in the hospital and held my hours old baby boy, and then calls me the next day saying she went to her doctor and had shingles!! Everyone was fine!

Re: Quick help - infant around someone with Shingles? or what about prego mom?
My DH 'may' have shingles now. My SIL is expecting so we checked with his MD who said the only way to get shingles is to directly touch the infected spots. Just to make sure, DH refused to hug her or even sit near her, my brother and their son on Christmas.
Me, I am always cautious because I had chicken pox twice, both times severe cases. My sister had measles twice. My tonsils grew back, my fathers did too. Then again..... I'm just a freak.

thanks everyone.
She doesn't have sores yet - she just has the pain (hence why they aren't sure if she has shingles.)
I had to run out for an hour so I'm sure there was lots of hugs and kisses. I think DH and I need to have a long talk re: health issues and disappointing family members.

Re: Quick help - infant around someone with Shingles? or what about prego mom?
My sister is just getting over shingles (well we think thats what she had) but I was VERY nervous to be around her, but Julia's dr and my dr told me that we would have to touch the sores in order to get it. My sister was around Julia for Christmas, and was holding and kissing her and Julia is fine. I would talk to you dr if you are worried, I'm sure she will be ok.
I'm 21 weeks pregnant too and was around my sister but I had the chicken pox so I was ok.... but as long as your mom's sores arent exposed and your DD doesn't touch them she should be fine.
One last thing.....Shingles isn't contagious like Chicken pox, in order to get shingles you have to touch the sores, its not airborne.

ITA. I wouldn't want my DD to get sick but you should also worry about you and your DH getting it because then your DD will really be at risk.

ITA - I have read people saying you shouldn't touch the sores - but if they have it on their hands etc and then touch something I don't know if you can pass it that way as well.

Its all about hygiene! Shingles usually starts on the back, chest or face. I told my sister to wash her hands before she touches Julia (she has the sores on her lower back), I was a nut--lol

Funny you should ask--my friend has a coworker who has shingles, and she is supposed to meet our DS next week. He is too young to get the chicken pox vaccine, but I am seeing our pediatrician during the week, so I'll let you know what she says.
I'm guessing it's okay since my friend isn't the one with shingles, but you never know.

Yes it is dangerous in p/g according to my Doc but you can only catch it if you touch her in the area. So just no contact for you and DD.

Re: Quick help - infant around someone with Shingles? or what about prego mom?
ok, My mom had shingles when dd was born, she was not allowed to hold her as a precaution until it was all dried up, but fact is, unless you touch the rash you can not contract chicken pox from it. Additionally, if your child or pregnant lady had chicken pox or the vaccine there is absolutely nothing to worry about. My sister-in-law and I both were pregnant when my mom had it and both obs said there was nothing to worry about cause we both already had it as a child. Call your pediatrician and ask..I got many opinions so I am sure noone was taking chances with my children.
Don't worry about it.

Re: Quick help - infant around someone with Shingles? or what about prego mom?
My sister found out she had shingles the day after DD's christening. My sister is DD's godmother and was holding her and kissing her ALL DAY LONG.
Her shingles were on her back and as long as there is no skin to skin contact with the sores, you're fine. DD was 4 months old when this happened and she never got sick.

Is it just me or is your MIL so selfish that she can't wait until she knows for sure. I mean what the heck is wrong with people. If I even think I have something contagious I would never go around babies or pregnant women!!

I am thinking the exact same thing.
she is being risky with 2 babies.
Leo had it this summer, he was told not to touch Josh, breakout or not. The dr said he did not want to risk a soon to be breakout coming in contact with josh.

Pregnant women and babies are generally a bit immunocompromised. Stay away until her shingles are crusted over (sorry to be gross) and no longer oozing. You both run the risk.

Our Ped said as long as the baby didn't come in direct physical contact with the infected area of the person with shingles, she'd be fine. And she was!
!
That is not true from my experience and from what I have been told as well. It not just spread from touching an infected area. Not true at all. Then most people would not get it b/c most people don't go touching other people's rashes or odd bumps.
I was immunocompromised years ago and got shingles from God knows who. I did have chickenpox as a kid so therefore if I came into contact with anyone with chickenpox or shingles I could get shingles and I did. Just as coughing spreads chickenpox (droplet virus) so does it for shingles. You do not need to touch them to get them.
Not at all. Stay far away. Better to be safe than sorry.
Read this: Can I give shingles to others? No one can catch shingles from you, but they can catch chickenpox if they haven't already had chickenpox or had the chickenpox vaccine. The chickenpox virus lives in the blisters from shingles, and the virus can be spread until the blisters are completely healed. If you have shingles, you should stay away from babies younger than 12 months and pregnant women. Excerpt taken from here http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/common/infections/common/viral/574.html
