I know you tend to shed a lot of hair after having a baby, but I am beginning to get scared. My hair has been falling out in clumps and I'm wondering if it is due to stress?

Yes, stress will do that and also a poor diet will make you loose hair.

I mean not eating certain foods or eating enough.

One of the top reasons for hair loss in females is actually a thyroid problem so I've been told...I had mine tested b.c I was losing so much hair. It was NOT the case with me, but my dermatologist said it's one of the biggest reasons.

It could be stress but I don't think it would be all that much?! I hope it corrects itself!! good luck!

Me too. I remember that sometimes this will happen to me during the year -but I can't remember what time of year, and how long it lasts. Chat Icon

I'll literally run my hand thru my hair and get 15-20 strands out. And in the shower I clog up the whole entire drain when it's clean before I start. And the other day at work I dropped my pen - so I put my hand down on the floor without looking to pick up my pen, and I picked up a hairball. It freaks me out.

I read that it is normal to lose betwen 50 and 100 strands a day, but I think I'm losing more than that. I've been like this for a month now... if I'm still this way after the new year I guess I'll need to goto the doctor.

ETA: I don't feel stressed, but there are some family issues going on now and maybe this is my only stress symptom... Hmm.. interesting.

I lost a lot of hair upwards of a year after I gave birth, so it could still be post-partum.

Other than that, yes, stress will cause it, so will nutritional deficits, and thyroid problems.

Yes, but if I recall you has your DD the same time I had my DS and your hair will/is prob falling out a lot now because of the pregnancy. It is happening to me too.... It happens because the pg hormones are leaving your system and while pg your were not loosing your hair as fast. According to babycenter it happens a lot now and will continue to do so for a month or two more. Chat Icon

Absolutely! I saw a derm for my hair loss and they ran lots of bloodwork and found nothing. I couldn't do any treatments b/c we were TTC at the time.

The hair loss lasted about a year for me, then just stopped.

I also had hair loss start when I was about 4 months PP. It lasted for about 3 months.

Definitely. Stress and changes in diet will certainly cause hair loss. I tend to lose a lot of hair during the changes of seasons too.

At this rate I may be bald soon! To think my hair was looking so GREAT during and after I had her. It still looks good, but it's a lot thinner!! Chat Icon

Don't worry- it comes backChat Icon Plus you are so used to all that hair that it feels thinner. I am 11 months post-partum and am finally getting my hair back.

Re: Aside from having a baby, is it possible for your hair to fall out in clumps due to stress?

In my experience as a Hairdresser (17 years)here are the biggest causes of hair loss in Women(my opinion)

1-After a baby(especially around 4-5months after)

2-Thyroid problem

3-Stress/anxiety

4- Blood Pressure medication

5-Diabetics(unsure if it is the meds or the condition)
