At what age do kids start appreciating the zoo?

My friend's baby is a week younger than Cailen - she was talking about maybe us going to the zoo at the end of the summer or fall - but they will only be 5-6 mts - I can't imagine them being too into the animals yet - I was thinking maybe when they are closer to a year - but would they be into it at a year old, or still too young?

Go at 2 years old. Jared had a MELTDOWN at the zoo when he was one. They appreciate it much more when they're a bit older.

Thats what I was thinking - to them its probably just a lot of walking and having no clue that there is somethign to see behind the fences!

We have taken Ava to the Bronx Zoo since she was a newborn. I would definately go with your friend this summer. It will be a nice day to spend with another Mom and baby.

Did Ava get the Zoo concept as a little baby?? Probably not. But I'm sure she enjoyed the fresh air and socializing.

Go, and enjoy...Take a lot of pix and show them to him when he gets bigger..Chat Icon

I just took DD to the Bronx Zoo over Memorial Day weekend. She was almost 5 months. She loved it. The petting zoo was great for her. She kept trying to touch the animals.

Marron is 14 months, and I can't see her enjoying it all that much. She'll like looking at all the different sites, but I just don't think she'll "get it" yet.

I agree that 2 years is a good age to go. My son went at 2 went to the Bronx Zoo and the LI Animal Farm in Manorville, LI. The Manorville one was great, all the animals were visable because, the Bronx Zoo is always chancy that you may not get to see anything...

I would say 2 and up is best! We took Julia when she was a year, and she really had no clue at what she was looking at--lol

We just took her to the PA zoo, and she loved it!!! She knew a lot of the animals from me reading her animal books to her, so it was cute seeing her say the animals name and point to it.

DD was pretty scared of the animals at a year old but it was still a nice day out for us as a family. I think she'll get it when she's a year or so older, maybe 2.

Re: At what age do kids start appreciating the zoo?

I brought my DD to the zoo at around 5-6 months, yeah, she mostly wasn't interested, but there were a few animals she was excited about- mostly the ones that were really close up and moved around enough so she could notice them. It's more just to get out and do something.

Also I took lots of pictures of the animals, and of her at the zoo, and made an album- I showed her the album many times in the following months, it helped her learn the names of different animals, and I would tell her that she went to the zoo with her friends and saw the animals. I'm not sure she "got" it, but she did learn many of the animals names.
