at what age do you spoil the kid?
At what age is it spoiling when you hold them when they cry?
MIL tells me not to hold DS when he gets worked up... I know there should be a time I let him fuss... but what is that time?

At like 13 months when he started throwing tantrums when he didn't get his way. At this point I knew the tears were just an act.
ETA: How old is DS? DS is 14 months and I always hold him when he is genuinely upset, just not when it's a tantrum.

I still hold my kids if they are upset. They are 22 months. Nothing wrong with comforting your child IMO. Now if they are having a tantrum I just stand back and watch the spectacle!

I like to remind DD to remember to thank Mommy and Daddy when she accepts her Oscar for Best Actress while in the throws of a tantrum

Oh... I'm talking about a really little kid... like 1 or 2 months who is fed, cleaned and just wants to be held all the time.
I would hold him 24/7 but I have a constant fight over what is spoiling with DH family.

1 or 2 months? there is no spoiling at 1-2 months. they are forming bonds! HOLD YOUR BABY!
now, at 4.5 months, DS knows how to handle us he has us wrapped around his tiny little fingers.
normally, I think around 6 months they begin to understand the connection between crying and being picked up/getting what they want. DS is figuring it out early (but i still scoop him up and snuggle him )

Can't spoil an infant! That said, you have to live your life, so if you can find a Bjorn carrier or something so you can be doing stuff, even better!

Re: at what age do you spoil the kid?
My theory won't be popular here but I truly believe that you can spoil an infant. And I don't think they are going to let you know when that magical moment is when you can start to spoil them.
I started from day one. I didn't do anything on my first day home from the hospital that I didn't want to get stuck doing for the next two years.
But everyone is different so, you have to decide for yourself what you want to do - regardless of what your MIL thinks!
