What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
Dh and I saw a very young girl (I think it was a girl) who had clearly died jet black hair. That got DH and I into a conversation about how young is too young to be dyeing your hair? I said I would ask you all since DH and I disagreed....so what do you think?

I'd say 14 or so. I remember being allowed to highlight my hair (which is light brown), when I was 13ish. Although, I don't think I would have been allowed to do such a drastic color.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I think HS age is good for something that isnt permanent.
Permanent? IDK I am very traditional but I dont have kids yet so who knows what they will be into? Maybe a "normal" color at 16/17.
NEVER pink or blue or anything like that until she is 18 and I really have no say in it. . .
if we have a boy who wants to dye his hair he better be able to outrun his father
ETA: my niece has highlights and perms and she is 12. for me, not only do i not like how it looks but i think its a shame to already damage hair that young! imagine how awesome our hair would be if we waited until we HAD to dye it for greys!!!

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
i think there will be such a huge array of responses on this.
honestly growing up - i never even considering dyeing my hair until like 17 or 18 cause i knew my parents would not have allowed me. i did it one time in colllege--otherwise never dyed it since. wasn't my cup of tea.
i think when i'm a parent, i might allow my child to do it around 16 if they want something like hi-lites or low lites. if they want anything more or crazier than that, they need to be 18. but that's just me.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I think I was allowed to perm my hair at 12, my mom did hair at the time, and I started to use sun in for highlights at 12 or 13. I did not dye my hair different colors until I was 14 or 15 though. But I do see a lot of 7th/8th graders at my school with dyed hair and piercings.
When we have children in the future, I would let them dye their hair maybe at the age of 13. I just asked my DH he said 13 too, and we both feel it does not matter girl or boy what color hair they want to do, whether it be brown-pink-green-red-purple, whatever they want.

My mother always said I was NOT allowed to dye my hair until I was an adult. I respect my mother and never did it - I first dyed my hair the year I graduated college. I personally don't agree with pre-teens or young teens dying their hair.

I would saying dyeing that color around 14. Highlighting around 11 or 12. I grew up with a very strict father who didn't let me do anything. It would make me a bad girl. I am now very liberal with my kids. If it makes them feel good about themselves and is not hurting anyone, no problem. (That is not what makes you good person)

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I started putting Sun In (remember that!?) in my hair when I was about 10. I started dying it at 13. My mother is kind of a hippie so she was cool with it. I still dye my hair! I'd let my daughter do start around the same age.
I saw a girl who was about 9 getting pink streaks in her hair at a salon near our apt. Her mom was very nice and the girl seemed very sweet

11 or 12. That's how old I was. And I wouldn't care if it was purple, green, blue, black, etc. I am all for her playing around with her hair at a young age. I did and had so much fun with it. I loved that my mom would let me have green hair. It was totally my personality to have wacky hair colors.

I was 13 or 14 the first time I dyed my hair. 8th grade. I think that's old enough.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
My mother and father wouldn't pay for me to dye my hair. So I had to wait until I was working to get it done... and THEN I had to wait until I worked enough that spending x dollars on hair color didn't seem like an extreme waste of funds I could use somewhere else! I was 19 or 20 by the time I got my first highlights.
My nieces both got their hair colored for the first time at 11 or 12. They are now 15 and 16 - straight A students with great manners. I don't think dying their hair at an early age had any negative effects!
But - proving that I am becoming my parents - I think I will employ the old "you can do it when you can pay for it" thing. There's a whole other level of thought that goes into it when it's coming out of your own pocket.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
My mother had a problem with dying my hair which I don't know why as it will grow back. I have no problem with doing things with your hair and piercings as they are not permanent. Tattoos would not be allowed until they are 18 when they will really know if they want it and realize it will be there forever.

I was never formally allowed to but at 15 I started coloring my hair black. I don't think they appreciated it though.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I think I used Sun-In without permission in 7th or 8th grade. I got highlights in highschool, but I had to get straight A's in order to get them.
I started dyeing my hair in college.
Times have definitely changed since I grew. I hope to allow DD h-light or something like that in HS - no earlier - and no single process!

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I started dying my hair when I was 13 or so -- started with just henna for fun coloring that wasn't too far off from my own. It wasn't like I needed to dye it, I just did it for fun.
I also grew up around the time that Manic Panic was all the rage. We had kids with jet black hair, blue hair, etc. It was never a really big deal.

OMG...remember "sun in"? My hair would get blonder and blonder and I would tell my parents it was just the sun. I must have been in 7th grade (12ish)

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
i colored my hair with Koolaid when i was 13 but just a strip. I started heavily coloring may hair at 14 until I was 22. Now I don't see the point since all it does is damage hair.
I would say it is okay for 14 and up in my book.
