At what point is the Epidural administered?

After watching "Notes from the Underbelly" last night and seeing the size of that needle..I'm wondering..when they give it you? Do you go through several painful contractions prior to them giving it or is it given after you have dialated to a certain point?

I was told not before 4 cm dilated...I had mine after they broke my water and I was progressing very quickly (contractions 2 minutes apart)...

Same here... before my water broke the contractions were bearable. Once they said they were going to break my water, I requested the epi.

Re: At what point is the Epidural administered?

I had mine at 3-4 cm's. Honestly it didn't hurt at all, just felt like a pinch then a slight burning.

Re: At what point is the Epidural administered?

I totally agree with it not hurting...the novicane to numb the area pinched, but after that, no pain...I had to have it put in multiple times and I didn't feel anything except the novicane...it was the best choice I could have made for my labor!

I had mine an hour before I delivered! If I had known I was so far along I may have opted not to have it. I am the minority!

I was 3-4cm when I got to the hospital.

Re: At what point is the Epidural administered?

I watched the video on babycenter.com about epidurals and it didnt look too bad. She made a "hurt-y" face at the novocaine shot though, does that hurt?

Me too. I think the needles is more intimidating than the actual procedure.

Michelle, If you are delivering at Lawrence, you should look to see if they have a Pain Options class. Since they are affiliated w/ my hospital, I don't see why they wouldn't . We offer it here, they go through all of the different options and allow you to see the epi needle ahead of time. It's a great way to prepare you.

Re: At what point is the Epidural administered?

I've talked to my mom and some other women and they said back then they hardly gave this shot out. They only gave them pills to calm there muscles.

I'm just in aw about how they went through it all without the shot. Of course I would like to try delivering without the shot but once you say no there's no going back.

Re: At what point is the Epidural administered?

once those contractions are in full force, the epidural will feel like a mosquito bite...

i got my epidural when i was i beginning to get very uncomforatble, and delivered three hours later.

I had my son naturally and WILL NOT go there again..LOL! I remember it like it was yesterday! I 'm hoping I'll be ok to handle the pain of the needle as opposed to the pain of birth. I'll have to try and keep remembering how much it hurt the first time when I had my son. I literally thought I was going to faint!

Re: At what point is the Epidural administered?

My doc told me I could have the epi at anytime. I was having full blown contractions every 2 minutes apart but was only 1cm dilated when I got it.

me too - I got mine after 9 hours of getting pitocin. 2 hours after that I was still 1cm, contractions were 2 minutes apart and baby was showing signs of being in distress - so we got a c-section.

Slight prick, slight burning - then the pain goes away!

Re: At what point is the Epidural administered?

The epidural itself doesn't hurt, you just have to hope they get it in right the first time. One of DH's coworkers just had a baby and I guess they had a resident do it because he didn't get it in until the 4th try Chat Icon

I've had an epidural with both DDs and the worst part is sitting still through a contraction while they try to give you the epi

Me too!!!

Plus I didn't want to risk having it too soon and being in a lot of pain later on,

I was passedout on the first course of drugs they gave me so I don't remember it hurting at all. But the site hurt the next day after the birth.
