Atheism is coming to the subway near you
Atheism is coming to the subway — or at least subway ads promoting it are.
Starting next Monday, a coalition of local groups will run a monthlong advertising campaign in a dozen Manhattan subway stations with the slogan “A Million New Yorkers Are Good Without God. Are You?” The posters also advertise the Web site BigAppleCoR.org, which provides a listing of local groups affiliated with the Coalition of Reason, the umbrella organization that coordinated the campaign.

To show that you don't have to belong to an organized religious group to be a good human being (which some religious groups imply or state outright).
They are just voicing their thoughts and opinions, just like advertisements for organized religion.

We have these on lots of buses and billboards here.
I think its great and throught provoking, if other religions can advertise, why not this?

I would think there's enough scandal and questionable activity in organized religions that atheists wouldn't have to advertise.

Exactly. My husband is an Atheist and you would not believe some of terrible things people have said about him because of it.

i don't think you have to belong to any "religion" to be a good person...so i guess it's a positive thing...i have noticed some people are jerky towards people who "don't believe".....i was raised catholic but i don't follow or believe any of it and some people look down on that i think....

Many people do not get atheism is a organized belief system and should be recognized as such. I am all for the ads, giving the knowledge to people who truly believe in it a place to research and find other like minded people.
I am not an atheist, I am anti-organized religion but I understand why people partake in it. I do however know many atheist and for years they have been shunned for their beliefs and think it is sick how they were treated.

I have to say that I have never thought of it as an organized belief system. I kind of thought that if you were atheist - it was more of an indiviual belief and it didnt make you part of community. Interesting!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism
Today, about 2.3% of the world's population describes itself as atheist, while a further 11.9% is described as nontheist.[4] Between 64% and 65% of Japanese describe themselves as atheists, agnostics, or non-believers,[5][6] and up to 48% in Russia.[5] The percentage of such persons in European Union member states ranges between 6% (Italy) and 85% (Sweden).[5]
There are probably just as many groups, books and organizations focused on atheism, non-theism and/or agnostics as there are for any other organized religion.

Why the sad face?
I believe in "A" higher power, but I don't go to church, I don't believe in certain religious practices, and I certainly don't believe that anyone should be sad or pity what I believe.
I think those ads are very inspiring.

LOVE IT -- and I'm also Catholic.
I have honestly always found it ironic that atheists organize to promote athiesm. Not against their right to do it or their beliefs at all - but always found it a tad ironic.

They'll have to compete with Jews for Jesus, the Watchtower people and the Scientology folks for my attention.
Who knew the subway was such fertile recruiting space

I'm atheist, and that's how I feel about it, but maybe that's also because I'm anti-organized religion as well. Either way....as for the billboard...

Can I ask where the irony is? Not being snarky or anything, I just don't see where it is. A group of people want to promote their belief that there is no Higher Power. Why is that ironic?
