Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
Interesting. I read it as "cool," too. ("I'm good with that.")
I'm OK with anything that doesn't insult other religions/beliefs. This one toes the line, in my opinion, because of the clouds... it seems to be kncking the idea of heaven, which I think could be seen as disrespectful to people who believe in it. But it's not terribly disrespectful, of course. Not like the "You're going to hell if you don't join my religion" kind of stuff.

Probably because I love my religion, could not get through tough times of my life without religion etc...and I have never once cared who believes or doesn't believe in religion or god or anything for that matter. People are "good" based on their character and own morals, not because they say their religious. I just don't really understand the need for the ads but whatever...free speech I guess!
Yes, you, and most other logical religious followers believe that. However, there are a LOT of people that think "Good=Religious" (actually, it's "Good=MY Religion").
I think it's good that they are letting people know about another option, without accosting them in the street or subway and yelling at them about how they are going to burn in Hell if they don't join their particular group....

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
I saw it and didn't think anything of it. I take the subway daily for the past 10 years. I've seen everything. I even lived near the Watchtower and had those poeple knocking on my apartment door.
To me, I'm only really invested in what my DH, DD and I believe. It really doesn't matter to me if others believe in a higher power or not. I know plenty of religious people who do terrible things, and plenty of non-believers who are wonderful human beings.
To each their own.

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
just to state i talked to a few atheist friends and they are not against organized belief systems, these people state they are apart of an organized belief system believing in science and not "myth" i put in quotes because this is what they had said not me. My friends meet in the city, have "sunday" school that teaches children all about science and not faith - more of a social meet n greet for parents and kids, they have book clubs, etc.
A dictionary states: Atheism can be either the rejection of theism, or the position that deities do not exist. In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities.
But this kinda shocked me: In Western culture, atheists are frequently assumed to be irreligious or unspiritual.[7] However, religious and spiritual belief systems such as forms of Buddhism that do not advocate belief in gods, have also been described as atheistic.[8] Although some atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism,[9] rationalism, and naturalism,[10] there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere.[11]
So the poster is from one sect of the "faith" just like any other religion.

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
Who cares? It's a sign that's not hurting anyone. If you're on the subway and don't agree with it, look at something else. It's much easier to ignore than the kids raising money for their "trip to Rome" (if you ride the subway you know what I'm talking about), or the various people with any number of issues asking for donations, or the preachers SCREAMING at 8 am on the 4/5 about the end of the world and how you're going to hell if you're not saved, the people who sing that can't sing.....a sign is nothing. There are a million other signs and PLENTY of interesting people to look at on the train. And not for nothing, the MTA needs as much money as they can get so they can stop raising fares (amongst other things), so if these signs add to their advertising revenue, I'm all for it.

Why do people have issues with Atheist? Afraid your own beliefs may be challenged?

What makes me feel unsettled about this ad is that the slogan is placed over clouds....which makes you think immediately of heaven, or what most peoples notion of heaven is (upwards in the sky). I realize its intentional but it makes me feel sad.

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
I dont like it, but I also dont like people shoving religion down my throat as well. You believe what you believe and let me believe what I believe. I dont need you questioning why I believe in god just like I dont need anyone trying to convert me into a different religion.
To me this add is just as judgemental and bad as the religious people in the subways.
I would expect more from atheist - that they didnt need to question anyone elses beliefs becuase they were usually strong in their own. To me this goes against that.
They are both in pooor taste, in my opinion.

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
There is a lot of discrimination in this country and others towards Atheists. There were ads very similar to this in the subway a few months ago for Muslims. This wiki article has a lot of great info.

I like the idea of giving atheists a voice. However, I don't really see the point in advertising any religion (or non-religion).

It's Human Nature to want other people to think the same way as you. Throughout history, it's always been that way. Wars are fought because the other guys think differently than you.

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
eh - whatevs. I never look at any signs/ads on the subway. Usually because I'm sleeping, reading a book, or listening to my ipod.
Freedom of the press/speech, right? So go ahead - put whatever you want up.
It's not like its a sign that is saying "You're going to burn in hell forever unless you become a _______." Even then I wouldn't care. I'll take ads over someone shoving something in my face - literature, cup for money, etc.

I think the sign is totally fine. Everyone has different beliefs or non-beliefs. Why shouldn't atheists be able to promote themselves?

Don't forget the men that do gymnastics/break dancing on the poles of the subways and scare the C R A P out of me because I always think the train is going to take a sharp turn and they are going to kick me in the head!

It's a free country...anyone can advertise.
A poster wouldn't change my entire belief system whether it's for atheists, organized religions, etc. That's something that you grow up with and develop over a lifetime.

ITA with this. I see nothing wrong with placing ads bc quite frankly if I dont want to read it, I wont look up- it's that simple. I just think it's ironic and a bit distasteful that they are using what most people picture "heaven" as the place to push their message... So yeah, its a passive agressive marketing technique. Again, I don't feel negatively at all about the adverstisements.

Well I guess some of us still can't get that image association out of our heads. I dunno, maybe its me but I always thought when you looked up in space you saw the sky.
