Attire to Black Tie wedding at The Breakers in Florida UPDATE: I bought a dress!
Ok...going to BIL's wedding at The Breakers in Florida. Lots of old Palm Beach money. Attire is Black Tie. DH is the Best Man, so I want to look nice. Wedding is in the beginning of January so I am really confused as to what to wear! I'm not familiar with the weather in Palm Beach during the Winter....from what I've heard it can really vary...
So, is a black dress totally out of the question since the wedding is in Florida? Should I try to stick with a bright color even though it's Winter? Help!
TIA
Update: I ran into Bloomies yesterday on a whim and brought one dress into the dressing room. I liked it enough that I just bought it. I don't feel like running all around trying to find anything better. It's BCBG (my fav brand...fits me well) and I will probably get a nice cashmere wrap that is colorful to go with it...

If attire is black tie, you should wear black.... You can never go wrong with a black dress, it always looks elegant.

I don't think this is true about black tie meaning wear black...but thanks for your advice. I'm going to look it up....I think black tie just means tux for guys and gown for women...

Re: Attire to Black Tie wedding at The Breakers in Florida
Black tie does not refer to the color nor does it mean women have to wear gowns.
A Black Tie invitation calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

Re: Attire to Black Tie wedding at The Breakers in Florida
i've been to miami in january, it was chilly and windy (for reference, i wore my quilted burberry jacket the whole time i was there)
anyway, for black tie, i would think a dressy gown of any color would be appropriate (including black)!

I think any color you choose is appropriate - you don't strike me as the type to show up in neon green
I went to school in Miami, it's not really COLD like it would be here, but it's not like you're going to need your bikini either - I personally would feel out of place in a material like velvet or something like that, but pepole do it -
They dress "season appropriate" rather than "weather appropriate" down there all the time -

These are all GREAT dresses. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to hit the mall one of these days without the baby and try and find a killer dress.

Re: Attire to Black Tie wedding at The Breakers in Florida
We were just at The Breakers 2 wks ago and saw guests dressed for a wedding - I would go with a long black gown for sure. If you're going to do something other than black - I'd do gold - I don't think I'd do a traditional "tropical" color.

Love the second one. I agree - this is a great excuse to get a super hot gown in any color (even black).

Re: Attire to Black Tie wedding at The Breakers in Florida
The Breakers is very formal... however, your attire should be dictated by the host. I attended a Saturday night wedding there in May and the attire was just Formal. If it is black tie, then I would wear whatever you wear to a black tie wedding in NY. It is warm that time of year, but bring a wrap in case it is windy and definately for the air conditioning.
ETA: A black dress is almost always acceptable... Florida or anywhere else. Have fun!

Re: Attire to Black Tie wedding at The Breakers in Florida
The weather can be tricky. I lived in FL for awhile and yes it can get chilly, but it could also very well be 70-75 in Jan too. Keep in mind you're rather far down into FL so the farther you are the warmer it tends to be. I would wear something formal but maybe not in black. Other choices would be navy blue, a deep red almost burgendy, dark green or even a rick purple or magenta color. Maybe play with the fabric a little. In Jan you could get away with velvet, suede(?) or anything layered/flowing. Good luck and post a pic of what you decide on!!

Re: Attire to Black Tie wedding at The Breakers in Florida
I would wear a gown like the ones Ophelia posted. It's better to be overdressed than underdressed.
For the weather, I heard it's unpredictable there.
Could you buy a wrap/fur wrap to coordinate the dress just in case you need it? You could always return it if you didn't need it.

Weather wise, January is very unpredictable. I've worn a turtleneck one day to wearing sleeveless the next. Even though the further down you are it gets warmer you can still run into a chill. I am on the southwest coast by the gulf and it can get to be in the 50's. (which is cold for FL) I would bring a wrap or something to cover your shoulders in case you get cold or even inside with the a/c.
