attn: owners of big, strong dogs
for loose-leash training: choke collar or no choke collar?
the skipping-through-the-prairie-side approach of treats and praise they taught us in puppy class is getting me nowhere with walking, and my 6 month-old german shepherd is throwing me around like a rag doll.
if no choke, please PLEASE offer advice. TIA!

Re: attn: owners of big, strong dogs
I use the easy walk harness with Maggie. She's 60 lbs - we had a lot of issues walking her with a flat collar and the pinch collar we were using just wasn't what I was looking for. We have hardly any issues with the easy walk harness and I feel like I have much more control

Similar to a choke collar... i have one that just gets tighter but its the same material as a regular collar...
I got it at shakadoghawaii.com
I have a 65lb boxer...
ETA: Sorry, they are called martingale collars

Re: attn: owners of big, strong dogs
I have a chest harness for my 75 pound Lab. She pulls like a freight train when she sees a rabbit, squirrel, etc. but most of the time, I don't really need that much extra security. One strap underneath the chest, one over the top of the back, and one across the front of the chest. The one across the front of the chest tightens when she pulls and actually takes her off a straight course because that's where the leash clips to.
We're working on a no-pull walk and heel but it's taking her a while. Admittedly, we could be more consistent more frequently too, so it's also our fault. As long as you know you're doing it right, it just takes a while with some dogs.

Same here. We used it for our rottie, and now we use it on our pit mix.

Re: attn: owners of big, strong dogs
thank you! someone had suggested the ez-walk to me. does it actually deter them from pulling by tightening around the chest, or does it just make it easier to keep them under control?

We use the same for our 65 lb lab mix.....he only pulls sometimes so it works for us but when he pulls hard he takes me off my feet.

Re: attn: owners of big, strong dogs
Michelle, that's a prong collar and I know a lot of people who use them, and swear by them. I'm glad it's helped! Everyone says it's an immediate improvement.
This whole thread is making me want to go train Ginger to heel in the backyard.

This is what we use as well when we walk or train both of our pit mixes. We use the little pads on the end too. My big guy does not pull at all anymore unless he gets real excited he tries to pull for a second then stops and our smaller pit mix, she would pull like crazy until we got this collar. As soon as she feels the collar she returns to heel position and walks like a perfect angel!

Re: attn: owners of big, strong dogs
We use a prong collar. I have a 75lb American Bulldog--she's from a weight pulling family so her instincts are to pull anything strapped to her. I know she won't attack anyone or anything when I walk her because she's a love but it's a just in case collar. I make sure there is always give on the lease unless I correct her...

Re: attn: owners of big, strong dogs
Might I add that Best Friend's Dog Training offers a free in home evaluation. You are also invited to come to anyone of our group classes, see what we can do and most importantly...talk to our clients.
Yes, I'm a client turned trainer, butttttt what prompted me to call BFDT was my german shepherd puppy. OHHH BOYYYY. If you check out our website at www.muttmanners.com, click on staff and click on my picture (Kimberly) you can hear my whole story.
Bottom line, BFDT made me go from HATING my dog to absolutely loving him more than anything else in the world (sorry DH, Rigel was around first). LMAO, but you know what I mean.

I think it tightens to be honest but I'm not sure - it also helps to keep you more ahead of the dog because it clips at the chest. Maggie used to lay in the road when another dog came and stay there until we let her say hello. Being pregnant I never had the strength to pull her and I hated pulling on her neck. With the EZ walk we have no problems with this at all. So far, it's the best pet purchase we've made!

Re: attn: owners of big, strong dogs
big fan of the prong collar here...i've used it on every dog I've had and it works great. I also highly recommend taking a training class at a petco or petsmart.

we have one more class at petco with dottie (the trainer). it was great for teaching commands--sit, stay, leave it, drop it, up, down, stand, etc. However, it's just positive reinforcement, and this approach has had NO impact on her leash walking, which gets more and more frustrating as she gets bigger. I've tried to talk to the trainer about this, and she uses it as an opportunity to embarrass me in front of other people--not pleased, need a new approach.
