Misconceptions of Big Dogs

I have a Rottie who is about 80 lbs. He is the most loveable dog I know and I am not just saying that cause he's mine Chat Icon

Yes I know his breed can look intimidating because of his size and reputation due to bad owners but people COME ON my dog will not eat your child for an appetizer! Yes that is what I heard last night while walking him along the boardwalk. A couple and their child were behind us and all of a sudden the ignorant parents decided to tell their daughter that loud enough for me to hear. OK fine, you want to be careful around big dogs, understandable but that comment was NOT called for.

Another night were at the park and some dumb girl walking by says "That dog is so scary why would anyone own that?" Ummm hello shut up!

My big doggie loves to cuddle, give kisses, be mushy to anyone that will give him attention. My poor puppy, so misunderstood. Just look at that face ....

Thanks for reading, I just needed to vent

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs

aww, what a cutie.

I totally understand how you feel. I have an american pit bull mix, he's not even that big, but people still say stupid things all the time.

"why would you get a pit bull?"
"you can't keep that dog when you have kids"

ugh. people are ignorant sometimes.

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs

I had a rottie, also and they are the biggest mushes EVER. Believe me, I totally understand what you're saying. I know what people say hurts, but try to take it with a grain of salt. Your baby is misunderstood, but looks like the sweetest thing ever. I wish people would give them a chance...

I know exactly how you feel, I have a rottie also and she is about 100lbs. When I am walking with her in the neighborhood people will actually cross the street so they don't have to walk by us. It is really annoying!!! People are afraid of her at the dog park, I guess I don't really get it, but to each his own.

But really she is the most lovable, sweetest dog I have ever owned!!!! How could this face be scary???

I know how you feel. We used to get comments like that about our Rottie too and he was the most lovable dog you'd ever want to meet. He thought he was a lap dog! We also have a pit/lab mix and get similar comments about her, too.

I know how you feel...although in a way, I have learned to embrace it.
At least noone is going to bother you when you are walking your dog.
My friend has always had Rotties and they have really been the sweetest, nicest dogs I've ever met.
And Misty scares people cuz of her eyes...which I can't even explain to people.

I agree. I have a Bullmastiff who is over 100lbs. and has the temperament of a bunny rabbit. Yet, growing up we had a toy poodle who would try to rip your leg off.

I adore rottie, DH had one when he lived with his parents. Zeus was the biggest mush ever but I will admit, I WAS intimidated the first time I met him

BTDT, I had an issue with some crazy woman at Pet Smart who went yelling into the store that there was a rottie outside. Meanwhile he was being pet by some people paying no mind nor giving her any reason to ay to me: "HOw do I know he is not going to bite me? Hello my pet has every right being there and didn't even notice you.

It's so hard. I feel bad for all the big breed dogs and they are always so sweet. I love pits and defend them all the time especially with all the bad press they have been receiving lately.

I was in Petco with Stella and a lady on line behind me backed up when she saw her and said, "Is that a pit bull???" No lady, it's just my goofy, 7 month old boxer!!!

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs

I grew up with big dogs. My current big babies are my grandfather's shepherds. I know them, I know their temperment, I am NOT afraid of them. I brush them, I feed them, I get in their faces...I am part of their pack. To me, they are big babies. HOWEVER, that does not mean I am not wary of strange dogs. I know that underneath all that girth is most likely a big ball of mush. But I am still cautious around strange dogs. It's all in how they are raised. But I understand WHY some people may be afraid. You never know how a strange dog is being raised. Especially a strange dog that already has a reputation.

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs

My dog looks very golden retriever (he's part golden part chow) Goldens are known to be great loving dogs and people are still scared of him.

I usually just let them know he is overly friendly and the worst he would do is attack them with kisses.

I always ask if any dog is friendly before I go near it little or big! You just never know!

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs

I have a 5 month rotti mix who almost looks pure rotti. He is the biggest mush EVER......

We were hiking the other day and both our dogs were off leash, our other dog is a 1 year old terrier, australian shepard mix (a total nut).

Well Toro, my rotti went running up to say "hi" he was very polite ran over sat and wagged his tail while his brother, Loki, the crazy dog was jumping around like crazy.

THe woman FREAKED OUT when Toro got near her. She said he was going to attack her. Meanwhile, he is siting there like a good boy while his dumbass brother is jumping around.

We grabbed them and put them on leash but I was just appalled that hte woman could care less about my terrier mix jumping ON HER while my rotti mix was near her sitting down.......

People can be so ignoratn sometimes!
