Haunting. This story has always haunted me. And sorry, but she was a POS. So many lives she destroyed....including the family of the people in the car she hit
10 drinks they said were still in her- according to her blood alcohol level. That and the pot. And she gets in a car with all those kids and drives Her own fuking kids. What kind of piece of shitt does that? I am sorry. I have no sympathy for that piece of trash
I agree!!! Everything about this story makes me so sick to my stomach. All of those lives lost. It's beyond words, my heart was breaking watching this documentary a few years ago. It's just so, so sad. And she was just so unbelievably selfish in her actions, she cost everyone so much. Just awful.
I didn't know about the Hance Family page, I took a look. What wonderful things they are doing but my god, it must be so hard for them every day. How do you ever really go on?? I read their bday letters to the girls, I couldn't breathe. Being a mom the thought of losing my children is the scariest thing in the world and reading those letters just makes me so upset. My heart hurts for those poor parents.

I think the thing that I can't get over with the Hance family is that in an instant their whole family was GONE. Like you have 3 daughters, a normal life and then BAM, all of it gone. As I said before, I can't even imagine having the mental capacity to go on after something like that. Horrific.

Does anyone watch The Biggest Loser? The year my son was born (2009) one of the contestants lost her husband, her 5 year old, and 2 week old baby in a car accident. She turned to food and gained a lot of weight, which was why she was on the show, but it was just heartbreaking hearing her talk about her family and seeing the struggles she went through after. :(

OMG I remember that. Her husband and baby and older daughter were going out somewhere and she stayed home and they were killed (by a drunk driver I want to say, but not sure). God life is just so fragile and precious and you just never know. Makes me want to never leave the house sometimes

I vaguely remember that too. I can't even imagine.
Someone my family knows in CA lost all 3 children in a car accident. They were on the exit ramp on the freeway and it was backed up. A semi truck came barreling off the exit and didn't stop in time. All 3 of her children died.
My cousin works at a fertility clinic out there and the woman, local to their neighborhood, did ivf with the husband. They had triplets. 2 girls and a boy. The same sexes that they lost.

Aunt Diane
I watched this last night. I don't really agree with what a lot of people are saying in regards to the weird relationship between Daniel and his SIL. I think the SIL was just close to the family. Nothing more. The whole story just seems very odd. Looking back at the video footage in the rest stop, she looked fine. She even drove out of there completely fine. What gets me is that she went from veering in and out of traffic to going completely straight almost on a mission as they described. Something is just very off with what happened. I honestly believe I would be like the husband and SIL trying to find out what really went wrong that day. And while I don't believe she suffered a stroke, I think there was a medical issue that occurred causing this to happen. And as for the pot in her system, it was probably from the night before or maybe even that morning. And while Daniel seems like a jerk, I don't think he really is. I think he's just a very angry man. I mean, can you blame him?
The part that got me the most was when the guy recounted getting the kids from the car. My heart sank. Even thinking about it while writing I get this terrible feeling inside.

I lost it at that point. Can you imagine how that must haunt that guy? For the rest of his life he will always be haunted by it.

I respectfully disagree with a lot of this. The husband was caught in so many lies. He said she never drank or smoke and then said that she would smoke to relax and get herself to sleep.
I definitely do not think any kind of medical issue occurred. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...it's a duck. She was drinking straight vodka. As for the pot, the autopsy report stated that it was freshly in her system. Within 15 minutes to an hour prior to her death. That is not something from the night before.
The drive should have taken under 2 hours. It took 4 hours to even get where she had the accident. She stopped numerous times.
Again for the husband. Yes he's angry. I would be angry too, but he's angry for diff reasons. He's angry bc he never wanted kids. Diane agreed to raise them and do everything. Now she's gone and he has a son and he resents her. Even at the end he said it's getting really old really quick. He doesn't want that kid and that makes this all so so much more tragic.
As for her pulling out of the gas station. Why did she pull up to the pump and get out instead of parking in a spot? She didn't get gas and there were parking spots right in front. Also, she sped out of there like a bat out of hell and just missed s couple of cars when she sped out and made a left turn.

There are no legal results on the Wikipedia page, but I can't believe that the husband sued his BIL b/c he owned the mini van!
In July 2011, Jackie Hance, who lost her three daughters in the accident, filed suit against her brother-in-law, Daniel Schuler. The suit claims that the three Hance girls suffered terror, fear of impending death, extreme horror, fright, and mental anguish.
On July 26, 2011, the day after the premiere of HBO's documentary on the subject, There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane, and on the second anniversary of the crash, Daniel Schuler announced that he is suing the State of New York for not keeping the road safe and his brother-in-law Warren Hance for being the owner of the minivan.
It is common in automobile collisions for the owner of the vehicle and the driver to be sued. The owner is considered liable in certain situations. Something to take note of - be careful who you loan your vehicle to!

Yes but considering the circumstances of this, it was a real scumbaag thing to do IMO

Re: Aunt Diane
She is a piece of shit. There's no other way to describe her. I don't think you can really refute medical evidence.
I didn't see the documentary and don't think I ever will. This story kept me up for many nights and it happened not long after a little girl and her mom in my town were run down by a drunk driver while leaving her dance school. That story kept me up too.
I am as careful as can be when driving my kid- and yet somehow I find a way to be more careful when driving other peoples' kids. It makes me so nervous. I just don't know how she could have done that with children- her own and her nieces- in the car. No normal, sane person does that.
Does anyone remember reading/hearing that she was on the phone for several hours the day/night before the crash? Maybe it was incorrect info because I would have thought that person's identity would have come out especially given what happened.

There was nothing medically wrong with her. Her DH was doing everything in his power to try and cover up the truth which was his wife was a drinker and smoked pot. Given what was found in her system and what occurred that day there is NO other logical explanation. She made horribly poor choices and killed herself and 7 other people that day. I have a hard time feeling anything for her, she did this to herself.

In the documentary they hired this top forensic doctor who did tons of autopsies and his findings were the same. Him and SIL sat with the guy and kept insisting it was a stroke. The Dr was like- no, i would have seen a stroke in the autopsy.
They started saying that maybe a stroke caused her to think the vodka was water and chug down half a bottle of it.
Or could a tooth abscess make her do that?
All these ridiculous straws they were grasping at and all the while this doctor was like- no, no, no, not that, not that.
They wanted it to be that somehow there was some magic reason why there was pot and booze in her system, something other than her consciously ingesting it. It was really far fetched

Which is why I'm confused about why it was even a documentary. It seems rather straight forward - she was drunk and high and killed 7 people. There's no conspiracy, there was no medical reason she had the accident - *maybe* she was in pain and drank too much, but it doesn't seem out of the ordinary for someone that was drinking and driving. Perhaps if the documentary was slanted toward the dangers of drinking/drugs and driving, I could see, but it all had a feeling like it was some sort of murder mystery without any facts.

I think it was made into a documentary for 2 reasons.
First, it was pretty much one of the most horrific and deadly auto accidents in NYS history and I think because there were so many fatalities, including children, people just wanted to know more and understand HOW this could possibly happen.
Secondly, I think her DH likely wanted this made because it was very much slanted towards him and the SIL trying to figure out another reason WHY she did this aside from the VERY obvious, logical conclusion which is............she was drunk and high.

I think the thing that I can't get over with the Hance family is that in an instant their whole family was GONE. Like you have 3 daughters, a normal life and then BAM, all of it gone. As I said before, I can't even imagine having the mental capacity to go on after something like that. Horrific.
I know!! How do you even begin to cope? Nothing about your life is the same, how could anything even matter anymore? It's just so heartbreaking, I give them so much credit for getting through it, staying together, and even having another baby. Every single day must be such a challenge. No parent should ever have to go through what they did.
Jackie Hance wrote a book called "I'll see you again." It's heartbreaking, but I really good read.

I read it in a day, and my heart was in my throat the entire time.
The thing that haunts me the most about this story isn't the alcohol, the pot, the crash, it's those 4 hours those kids were in the car alone with her. What went on? How scared were these poor kids? I get sick to my stomach when I try imagining these kids strapped into car seats (basically trapped) and knowing something is wrong with Aunt Diane

I just finished watching it. I'm not sure I understand why this was something that warrants a documentary. It seems pretty straight forward to me - she was drunk and high on pot. The why's don't really seem any more out of the ordinary for any other tragic story when someone is killed - maybe she found out bad news, maybe she was in a lot of pain, or maybe she had a stroke (which is unlikely since nothing else showed in the autopsy.
It was certainly a horrible tragedy to lose so many (especially the kids), but it's not like there's a documentary about every driving tragedy - like the limo driver that mis-judged traffic and killed those 6 young women last year.
The one from the vineyard?
He was T-Boned by a drunk driver in a huge truck!!!

I hope this doesn't come off as insensitive - but I wonder if her surviving son will ever speak out about what went on that day. I mean, I think he was only five but I still wonder what he remembers.
