Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
Thought I would pass this along. This is run by those that did the Sensory Santa this past holiday season.

I don't know about anyone else, but I often get upset and disgusted at how much these special needs programs cost. Actually everything pertaining to special needs. The doctors that don't take insurance, the evaluations that cost $$$, the alternative treatments that often times don't work, etc. I feel like they try to take advantage. It's very discouraging!

$450. That is horrible. I can understand charging for the daily rate for the place but that is crazy! There are so few events like this and then to charge so much it is very disheartening.

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
I got all excited to register DS until I saw you all post the price. Therefore I will not be registering him. We should just have our own program since there seems to be enough of us that would be interested in joining. We could make our own schedule of 6 weeks worth of field trips for just the price of wherever we go. Anyone interested?

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
I'm always up for a playdate but I think that the best part of the social skills group was that it was being facilitated by special education teachers.
But I'm always in for playdates!! : ).

Sad, really why so much? 75.per hour, for what? Maybe I'm bad but when she responds to my email I think I'm saying something, I have too. I was really excited too :(

I did respond and said that was just entirely too expensive. She did not respond. I thought she would have at least tried to justify the cost to me
Social skills groups don't really work when it's ALL children with special needs. They need typical kids too, otherwise all the kids are just modeling the same behaviors amongst children that lack social skills. Not sure if this program provided typical kids or not.

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
I expressed that $450 was certainly not in the budget but asked a follow up question (possibility of a Sensory Easter Bunny) so maybe when (if) she responds, she'll justify the cost.

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
Good Lord, could a bunch of us hire someone studying for their Masters in Special Education or some other related field to moderate our own play group? This is soooo costly!
I am up for playdates too, though I'm only available weekends. Western Nassau County anyone?

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
Hi everyone. I don't post too often anymore (sorry!) but I could arrange to put together a social skills group. I have a few different therapists through Sensory Street Kids who specialize in facilitated play dates. If you're interested please reply with how old your child is chronologically and also what developmental age he/she is testing at. You can FM info for privacy. The first class would most likely be held in the stony brook area although a Nassau location could be available if there is enough interest. Cost would depend on the number of kids signed up but will not exceed $20 per class. Let me know.

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
I have taught Adapted PE for over 10-years and would gladly help facilitate some play dates. My DS is turning 4 in March and is PDD-NOS. I have a hard time finding activities for him.

Her first email I explained about 3yr.old (PDD) and my 2yr.old (typcial) how I wanted them to be together, so she said my 2 yr.old would be free- even though it's still 450! Then my 7yr.old would have a seperate 1-1 and I'd get a 10% discount. Sorry but your talking almost 1000. for 6 weeks? Unless your gonna get my 7 year old to talk I don't think so. I'd so like to do a social group with my 3 year old, and my 2 year old is an amazing playmate

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
I'm in Holbrook. DS is 3 with PDD-NOS. I would be interested in a class I. Stonybrook or in Nassau. Or just playmates. I would love my DS to socialize more with anyone that wants to play with him.

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
as someone who actually runs social skills groups, i just wanted to offer a different perspective on the cost of programs. i know that in my program, which offers a 1:2 ratio, certified teachers and assistants and peer models, that maintaining quality is of the utmost importance. so that means paying for well qualified staff. in our jcc a 14 week program can cost $400, for 2 hours. i am not familiar with this particular program, but trust me when i say that it is not easy to run a program without dedicated and trained staff. i rack my brain everyday to find funding for our programs and in this economy it is not easy.
to offer some help, are any of your children OPWDD eligible? OPWDD offers family reimbursement up to $1000 for programs such as social skills groups, swim, camp etc. OPWDD stands for office of people with developmental disabilities, in case anyone doesnt know. if you want to know how to become eligible i would be happy to help anyone out. no charge

I would gladly pay $400 for 14 weeks. But for 6 weeks? That is atrocious. I would never waste my OPWDD reimbursement (well IF we qualified) on a program that cost that much for 6 weeks.

Re: Autistic/SPD Social Skills Workshop
I never heard of OPWDD although I have heard DS' therapist mention money for play groups...however, I was under the impression that because DS is not "severely" impaired, he would never qualify
I also agree that I would willingly pay $400 for a 16 week program (which is what I incorrectly thought THIS sensory program was going to be in the ball park of).

I too would gladly pay $400 for 16 weeks. But $450 for 6 weeks is nuts!!
I think you need to apply to medicaid in order to recieve it. I don't think it's easy to get accepted to medicaid and they have a bunch of "qualifiers" .

To qualify for OPWDD you need an IQ lower than a certain number, I can't recall, but my child was above that number. If the IQ is higher, they need a low adaptive behavior score, which comes from the Vineland Binet test. I have yet to get an updated Vineland. Most places want $750 to do one, which again, taking advantage. So I'm waiting on the school to do one. You do not need Medicaid. You can apply for a Medicaid waiver based on disability, and not financials.
The IQ and Vineland score should be on your IEP under the testing score section.
ETA: IQ under 60.
You can call this number and speak to someone about applying for OPWDD. They will guide you. I had to mail to them an IEP, diagnosis from doctor, annual reviews, and any other pertinent information.
