Awkward question for the boy mommies. Er, moms of boys that is. Yes, it's regarding the 'twig and berries'
So DS just found his Diaper changes have become special in a whole new way around here What's the recommended, er, strategy here... Just let them go wild with their new discovery or do you intervene at all ? So far I'm just kind of ignoring the whole thing and wrestling that diaper on him but I don't want to mess him up or anything I cannot even *BELIEVE* I'm posting this but I'm curious what you do. Did. Whatever

I did nothing... it was just a phase, exploring something new.
But the "twigs and berries" thing made me LOL. It reminded me of There's Something About Mary-- "frank and beans! frank and beans!"

Seriously though I'd like to see more responses...I'm not sure what the right thing to do is..

Exactly. You should see my son's face when he "explores", usually in the bath...he gets all quiet and looks puzzled LOL...I leave him alone, let him have his privacy. I think its ok to let them explore their privates, its when they get a little older you have to explain to them that they should do it in privacy.

I just let him grab at it...he's not even 6 months old, what long-term harm can it do. I don't think it's much different from his feet, which he also grabs at every time he can. It's all just learning about his body and the world around him.

Same here, he only finds it in the bathtub, laughs to himself...I laugh at him, and then go about washing him. He's just learning.

I let him explore during a bath, but not during diaper changes.
It's usually pretty gross down there with poop and pee and all so I don't want to have to clean his hands afterwards.
I distract him with a toy or something else to keep his hands occupied.

he's only 5m, but he tries SO HARD to get at it during diaper changes. I intercept it 97% of the time...I put his hands on his belly instead. And he laughs at me.

I agree. DS noticed it sitting in the bath the other night. The look on his face was an obvious "Well what is this here?" just like when he found his hands & feet. He lost interest quickly & moved on. I think he's too young for me to really intervene.

My friend had this same issue and asked her ped. Ped said to let him do it and not comment in any way.

Defintely let him explore.
My DS has been doing this in the tub since he could see it. I asked the ped because he's sometimes REALLY really rough (like grab, yank away from body with a CLAWED grip and then let go ) and she said to let him do it.
She also said that I'll probably still be telling him to stop pulling on that when he's 30 so no use in wasting my breath now

Um, I'm kidding but what should I keep lying around to hand him on such occasions? My son is only 2 so maybe I can just hand him a Q-tip? Sorry, long week .
Seriously I would say to let him explore a little then try to distract him.

I let him explore, if things are messy and need to be cleaned up I give him a diaper to 'hold for me' but sometimes that gets thrown to the side so he can get back to what he was after.
