Awwwww... my students are the best!!
On Thursday my senior year College Economics students commented about it being our first married Christmas, etc. and I said well, yeah, but we don't have a tree as we are living with IL's (DH's family is Jewish) but no big deal. (We sold one house and are waiting until the new house's massive renovations are complete)
Yesterday, 5 minutes into the period there is all of this noise in the hallway. I look out and one student is dressed as Santa, four others are elves and they are bringing a 6 ft. Christmas tree completely decorated down the hallway on a dolly!! On Thursday, they all got together after class and decided no way could Mrs. K not have a tree!!! So they went to Home Depot to get me a tree. They collected money and everyone brought in an ornament, lights, tree stand, etc. Turns out most of the school knew about this as the tree was in the school store all day.
I was shocked  even more so when I got the tree in the back of my car (Yay, Toyota Camry!!) and now it's in the kitchen of the apt. (no room in living room)
Yes, there are some VERY generous and loving teenagers out there

that is SUCH an awesome story- even more so to hear a nice 'teenager' story- with all that you hear about these days!

They are such good kids! I taught them in ninth and tenth grade as I was the only Advanced Placement World History teacher until last year. They knew me before DH did... I've taught them for 2 1/2 years of high school.
Oh, and for the Thanksgiving food drive they donated over 1000 cans of food  (I did give one point extra credit towards a quiz grade for every can... limit ten points) I got a letter in my box saying that their contributions made up over 90% of the school's food drive.

I have to say I am very lucky. I teach 4 classes on the AP or college level and one Regents level class. I haven't had one of the "notorious" kids in a very long time and when many teachers mention one I often don't know who they are. I make sure I keep my mouth shut about that. The thing is my AP students are not AP because they are naturally brilliant. They are AP because their parents care and are involved with their lives and instilled values of generosity, kindness and discipline. They are their parents, not their "friends". It's sad that most kids today do not have the support systems surrounding them that consistently model such behavior.
They crack me up everyday. After teaching for 11 years I don't think I could work with adults... they'd drive me crazy
