Babies and the beach- looking for advice and tips

In a few days we are leaving to visit my parents on the Jersey Shore. They haven't seen DS in 6 months, so this is very exciting!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
Does anybody have advice and/or tips about babies and the sand? I really don't want to drag the pack n play to the beach and get sand all in that. Do you have anything that made your life easier? TIA!!!

I would say just lay him on a sheet with an umbrella over him....now that I think of it he probably won't stay on the sheet Chat Icon

I guess I am not help because I only took Hayley to the beach for the 1st time last year (she was almost 2) so I don't know what it is like with a 1 year old

Bring DC earlier in the day on warm days. We went to the beach around 3 last weekend, and the sand was hot by the time we arrived (though the air was not). We had a big beach towel down, but he started crying as soon as we got on the beach. I think it was the sand heat.

So go earlier and bring an umbrella or canopy.

Re: Babies and the beach- looking for advice and tips

Umbrella and sheet/blanket and LOTS of buckets and shovels and toys to distract from eating the sand/rocks/seaweed...it's inevitable though...expect handfuls to go in. After a while though they get over the fascination of it and move on to other things.

At least DD did Chat Icon

You just really have to be on them and keep a close eye. A lot of "YUCK!" "NO!" "NOT IN YOUR MOUTH!" Chat Icon

Sunscreen and a HAT!

Bring a sheet for him to sit on under the umbrella. Also, it up toys r us for one of their cheapie (like $3) mini blow up pools. Blow it up when you get there or before you go and put some water in it (from a cooler or something). That way he can play with his toys sitting next to it. It's also a good/easy way to wipe the sand off of his hands, and if you put him in the ocean to wash him down real quick.

My friend did the above when we took our kids to the Jones Beach airshow and it worked out great.

I bought one of those pop up tent things for DS but he really only ate his lunch in there. He didn't nap in it.

Bring a cooler/lunch box with snacks, lunch and drinks.

We also have an umbrella we bring to the beach with us.

Sand toys.

Lots of sunscreen and re-apply every couple of hours.

Change of diapers and swim diapers with ALOT of wipes.

Beach towel.

Even a set of dry clothes.

Baby powder makes sand come right off their sticky skin. Just sprinkle it on and brush off. Works great, especially when it's all stuck on the sunblock.

that is great!! 2 weeks ago, we had so much sand stuck to us in the car going home.Chat Icon

we fill a baby pool....then we drag it up from the water to our tent.

bring tons of toys.

bury him or DH...that will keep him occupied.

Josh loves the beach...mainly because if he has already pooped that morning, I will let him free ball it under his bathing suit.

I brought his little 13.00 plastic booster seat. Kept him out of my beach chair, plus he had the tray to eat.

I packed everything small...like 1/4 of the sandwich seperate, 1/2 banana...he only sat for a short time and I did not want him eating a sandy sandwich.
or not eating it.
also, by making him eat....he is drying off, then I get a great sunscreen reapply.

put a shirt on the kid at all times and a hat.
its a different sun then the one we had.
even though they are too cute with their bellies hanging out, that's a lot of exposure to skin.

have fun! one thing to tell you is, its a beach experience like you have never had beforeChat Icon no need for that book to read while you are relaxing!

oh yeah....watershoes! the sand was HOT

okay heres a little trick i learned to get the sand off... baby powder and a brush (like a blush brush or big soft paint brush) just put baby powder on them and brush the sand off. It works so much better than water.

Which beach do you think you are going too? If it is Long Branch maybe we can have a mini GTG Chat Icon . If it is Long Branch the water isn't to far from the broadway which is nice and their is a small playground with some swings at the seven presidents beach. Pier Village is also really nice to walk.

I brought my 2 to the beach by myself 2 weeks ago and it wasn't bad at all. Definitly bring the baby powder, a few toys and I think you'll be fine. I did bring them in the stroller and you need to pull it on the sand not push it.
