Honestly (I may get flamed here), but I don't think women should bring babies to bars at ALL, whether it's for just one drink or hours of drinking. That's not the place for a baby. If you want to go drinking, get a sitter. Not only is the bar a bad environment, but getting drunk while having a child in your supervision is wrong on so many levels. JMO though.
I agree!
Me too

Re: Babies in Bars
Isn't that woman essentially giving her child alcohol if she drinks beers right before breastfeeding? That's child endangerment and should not be tolerated. I also agree that bars are not a place for children.

Re: Babies in Bars
This is from ivillage:
Are there any sort of a guidelines for drinking alcohol while nursing? How long should you wait after you've had "too much" to nurse your child?
Having an occasional alcoholic drink has not been shown to be harmful to your nursing baby, though it may have a mildly sedating effect.
Alcohol can be found in breastmilk about 30 minutes after consumption. While drinking, and for two to three hours afterwards, it is best to avoid breastfeeding.(Medications and Mothers' Milk, Thomas Hale, R.Ph.,Ph.D., 1994)
Regular abuse of alcohol interferes with the mother's ability to care for her baby, can inhibit her milk ejection, may slow baby's motor development, and may result in slow weight gain or failure to thrive. The effect that alcohol has on the baby seems to be directly related to the amount the mother drinks.
And she nurses after drinking

Re: Babies in Bars
wow, that is so wrong in so many levels. Babies or children you stay home where they belong. that's not the right environment for them and the fact that this mother is doing this, is completely atrocious.

Re: Babies in Bars
Well, there are so many reasons why babies do not belong in bars. It's not safe. And drinking and breast feeding are two things that should not be mixed. You might as well give the baby a beer in it's bottle. Who knows, maybe this woman doesn't know any better. I'm never surprised by the amount of stupid people in the world

Re: Babies in Bars
While living in Ireland I saw plenty of children in bars. From about 8 weeks old to 18 years old. On St. Patty's day the bars, or should I say pubs are filled with families. Actually, Alex went to his first pub when he was 3 weeks old. We went out to lunch the last day my parents were visiting. I had one drink and we weren't there partying for hours or anything. I don't view myself as a bad mother for doing so. However, now that he is older, I don't know if I would bring him out to the bar. I don't think it is wrong, but here in this country its not part of our culture so I would feel uncomfortable doing so.

She shouldnt be downing beers if she is breastfeeding, the alcohol goes to the baby.
One beer is one thing - but beers???!!??
A baby should not be in a bar, unless its like a restaurant/bar and the mother is there for a party or something.
To go to a bar on a random Fri/Sat night and bring your baby is wrong.
I agree

Re: Babies in Bars
Guilty as charged.
I brought my 2 year old & 4 year old to a bar to see DH's friend play in a band. I was completely uncomfortable doing it - and won't be doing it again anytime soon. Yes the kids loved it dancing & clapping to the music - but I agree a bar is no place for them. It would've been different if the band was playing in an outdoor venue or something.
And no you don't have to be 21 to get in a bar - you have to be 21 to drink alcohol.

Because the bars that enforce that have their own set of rules which you must abide by if you want to enter their establishment.
And just because you are 21... doesn't mean you can get into every bar. I know plenty of bars that are 23 and over and 25 and over.

Re: Babies in Bars
You know I've heard that drinking a beer a week is good for a lactating mother...but this is out of control!! They don't say to drink it WHILE nursing!!
I feel mostly for that poor baby and the hearing loss that it is definitely suffering.

Re: Babies in Bars
i'm not commenting on the breastfeeding aspect of it- since i know nothing about it... But, i still have to share my experience with this....
I grew up in a bar! my parents owned a bar, and we lived upstairs from it- we were basically there everyday. granted, once night time came around- we were out of there! my mom never drank, so that wasn't an issue. But anyway- it taught me ALOT about people. i understand where alot of you are coming from with your feelings on the topic- but there's so many different situations and levels to be taken into account (is it a neighborhood type bar? Im sure shes not bringing her infant out clubbing with her). Whatever the case may be- just realize that there may be many other sides to it- before you pass judgement.
another question i have is- WHY is it okay, or 'lovely' to think about doing that in another country, but a Serious Sin if you do it here?
