baby shower menu...critique mine por favor!!!
so, I am doing an outdoor backyard luncheon at my house.
I don't want to bbq b/c I expect about 50 or 60 people and I don't think anyone should have to make that many hotdogs/hamburgers. **Please note it will be CO-ED
so......this is my idea. please feel free to make suggestions for additions/subtractions
appetizers (I feel I will need more here) various dips (hummus, skordalia. taramosalata, tzatziki, plus white bean dip, black bean dip, and guacamole) assorted chips and veggies quiche (lorraine and spinach) fruit salad assorted antipasto platter caprese skewers
main my idea here is to do several different base salads greek (replete with feta and olives) caesar (croutons, shaved parm) Garden (corn, broccoli etc) tortellini (fresh mozz, cherry tomatoes, pesto) couscous (parsely, almond, dried cranberries etc)
served with grilled chicken strips fried chicken strips chef salad pinwheels (turkey, ham, and cheese) grilled shrimp
assorted breads and rolls
I am debating about having hot dishes. I CAN (we have racks for buffet style) but not sure if it was necessary.
it will be outdoors, in late August, during the afternoon, under a tent.
let me know what you think!
TIA.
ETA: suggestions taken!! keep 'em coming girls.
and thank you!!!
Beverages beer wine prosecco and Izze refresco (with sliced fruit) soda juice

OMG- sounds delicious!
How about adding some kabobs - veggie kabobs, shrimp, chicken? Or do you want to avoid the bbq altogether?

your menu sounds yummy! It is similar to what we did & honestly everyone raved. We did gourmet wraps & various different salads. With women, especially in the summer months, they tend to eat less. No one is looking for heavy hot food in August!

would you change your thinking if I said it would be co-ed (jack and jill)?

Ideally I'd like to avoid DAY OF grilling. dh and I will be grilling up anything that needs to be the day before (the chicken, shrimp, and veggies for the couscous-bellas, zucch's, and onions)

Re: baby shower menu...critique mine por favor!!!
I just hosted an outdoor baby shower and this sounds great! Maybe a fruit dish of some kind? We did fruit kabobs with cream cheese sauce that were a hit. I wouldn't do hot dishes, but that's me, when I think of an outdoor shower I think of light foods, nothing super heavy.

i think it sounds PERFECT!
i wouldn't get into hot dishes... no need. an outdoor event like this sounds perfect with cool, light foods.
along those lines, if you think you need more appetizer type stuff, how about a cheese/fruit/cracker display?
i also like the AP's idea of fruit kabobs or something similar for dessert.
all in all, sounds very refreshing

Re: baby shower menu...critique mine por favor!!!
that sounds yummy..
for the appetizers:
maybe also adding some fruit/meat combo..like a canteloupe/prosciutto on sticks..i love that..
or a cheese/cracker platter
or a fresh mozzerella/tomotoe skewers thrown in there.
everything else sounds awesome.

I think it sounds really good, but honestly I would add another option besides salads. Especially since you will have men there. I think that having sandwich wraps is a good idea.

Hmm, well it depends on the men! If it was my shower with DH's guys around, I would have to consider some hot foods. The men in his family are more into the hot stuff then the sandwhichs....But then again, I might even do a hot hero or 2 this way they would be happy & remain as simple as possible

Re: baby shower menu...critique mine por favor!!!
i would do more hot hors d'ouevres. at a party like that i know i prefer to graze rather than sit down with a full plate to eat.
also, what about something for the guys? i don't know what their tastes are, but my DH's friends would kill for some buffalo wings

Re: baby shower menu...critique mine por favor!!!
Add some fruit salad in there too, especially if it turns out to be a hot day.
Will children be attending? Is it more of a family shower or just Jack & Jill?
If kids will be there, I'd add some kid-friendly options based on their ages.
As for the men, in my family, if you put it in front of them, they will eat it. You could also order a cold hero for them to devour, if they should choose to do that.
What kind of beverages are you having?

Men=meat...not salads
I would include something for them....eggplant parm and or Penne A la vodka is easy and can be made in advance and reheated...

I think your menu is great. Only because men will be there.....I would possibly consider adding a tray of baked ziti and meatballs. It's fairly simple to make and the meatballs you could get the giant bags from costco.

Re: baby shower menu...critique mine por favor!!!
The menu sounds great!! Truthfully, though I think some of the men may go hungry. My DH is a varied and advernturous eater but I think that he would probably be hungry.
I think I would put together a platter of antipasta with prosciutto, soppresatta, speck, cheeses, etc. and some different types of bread for people to make themselves some small sandwiiches.
All in all it sounds delicious though!!

I am a sick sick woman.
anything I make will be from scratch. I could ask my mom to make meatballs and sauce if I didn't feel up to it. I won't even order that from a caterer. like I said...sick sick sick.
there will be kids there, but the kids in my family eat the type of food I am serving (they are good eaters...love seafood, veggies and stuff like that)
I am NOT making buffalo wings I don't care. I hate them. HATE
my other thought about this was to let the guys have sort of a separate area in the front of the house.
we have a HUGE front yard and they could hang there and play soccer, drink beers while we were in the back ooohhing and ahhhing over baby stuff.
we have a smaller portable bbq that they could make themselves hotdogs and steak etc. away from the main party.

I had a feeling the costco meatballs weren't going to go over very well with you You always seemed like a 'from scratch" type of lady
I do like the soccer/hotdogs out front idea, although the kids may end up out there too

Re: baby shower menu...critique mine por favor!!!
I think the menu looks good, but I agree with the pp that the men will want more than salads. I know you said you like to make everything from scratch, but what about adding a couple of 4-6 foot heros? Maybe an american, italian and chicken cutlet one? The Italian deli I use makes an excellent chicken cutlet with fresh mozz and red peppers. That may be easier that bbq or hot dishes.

Re: baby shower menu...critique mine por favor!!!
everything sounds really good!!!
but, since there are men there (which, btw, you ROCK for having a co-ed shower), i would add some kind of pasta dish, perhaps a penne w/vodka sauce?
also a chicken dish-chicken francese or one of those, and also a sausage n peppers one
maybe a dish of asparagus and roasted potatoes
but you r crazy for makig it yourself!! is tehre no one who could cook for u??
