Babysitter cost ... question
My niece is in college and 20. She'll be 21 soon.
She's asking me what to charge a family for babysitting. This is what I got - 3 kids - 18 months, 5 and 7 roughly 2 days a week during the day to help with online learning and make schedule Some are mornings till 5PM
I have 2 older boys and pay between $12 - $15 an hour, but mine are just 11 and 9 and most of their sitters have been 16 and I buy the pizza for dinner and the boys are pretty easy.
What do you think she should tell the woman??
Thanks

Re: Babysitter cost ... question
When I hired a babysitter when my kids were those ages, it was $15/ plus tip, and that was five to ten years ago. I would expect to pay more for a college student than a high school student. I would expect $20 hr if babysitting. More if she is tutoring.

Thanks! I was telling her it's going to be a lot bc toddlers aren't easy and on top of that you are helping the 7 and 5 year old with online. Plus the 5 year old will mostly need help navigating the laptop.

Babysitter cost ... question
We pay $20 an hour for a babysitter in their 20s. A little less for a teenage babysitter.

Re: Babysitter cost ... question
The going rate near me is $18. Maybe with 3 kids she could get $20

Re: Babysitter cost ... question
For 3 kids I would think around 15-20 an hour is good.
If it was all day all week I would do a flat rate. I would even consider doing a flat rate even for 2 days if it was all day.
That’s me. I would not pay anybody anymore than I would pay a daycare center. Especially if it’s off the book

Babysitter cost ... question
I pay $20 an hour for 2 kids twins-3.5 One day a week for 5 hours. She has to do nothing but help them with the potty if needed and keep them alive until my husband gets home. Maybe get them a snack if they want one! I’ve been paying her the same rate since they were infants at 6 months and needed a lot of care. I think over time the work has changed and if I needed her to help with online learning I would keep her at $20 an hour. If I had a 3rd kid I would likely pay $25 an hour

For those ages, I'd say $18-$20.

Re: Babysitter cost ... question
I pay $15. I'm not paying more than that until they prove themselves and here's why. I have gone through a number of babysitters over the past years in that age range. It is VERY hard to find a sitter that will actually do stuff with your kids.
I had a mother's helper here in June who was 20. Very sweet, funny, likeable. I was here working. She wanted $21/hour. Because of the situation, I agreed to it. She sat on her ass on her cell phone making Tik Toks with my kids all day. I would give her stuff to do with them and she would blow through it and then go back to Tik Toking. I had several conversations with her about it but it doesn't matter. I could have them sit on their devices all day for free so why am I paying this kid all that money?
I actually had one really mature very engaging babysitter right before the pandemic who ended up moving to the mid-west. We were so depressed about it.
I had a 17 year old tell me she wanted $20/hour. I needed her 3 days. That's $480 cash a week. I know adults with college degrees not making that much money.

tipping seems so odd to me. why tip? did you provide them with a 1099?

I'm confused on the tipping too. I never got a tip when I babysat- I got the full amount of the hourly rate they gave me. What is the tip for?

My friend tips - she usually rounds up to the next hour as the tip...

Oh rounding up I can see. Like giving a little extra. The word tip threw me off.

to me that's not a tip, a tip is additional money for a good job. To rounding up to means making it easier to pay without needing change back ...
ex $17.5 owed but giving $18,

Babysitter cost ... question
I paid $16 an hour for someone in her early 20's with daycare experience during the height of the pandemic. That's what she asked for. I have a fairly easy 4 year old. We also got her lunch whenever she was there at lunchtime. She was great.
We briefly investigated having a sitter to cover the remote part of the hybrid this year and I'd say the average for a college kid was $25. Someone told me they pay $30. We're sending DD to an after school program 2 days a week....

Babysitter cost ... question
I just re-read the OP. In that situation, I think she should ask for at least $15 an hour, and probably closer to $20. That's 3 kids and 18 months is a rough age. To be responsible for a possibly unsteady on their feet toddler and remote school for 2 other kids simultaneously sounds like chaos. I'm 35 and not sure I could handle that.

Babysitter cost ... question
Has your family member watched that many kids those ages before? Honestly, I think $15-18/hour would be fine, but i have an 18 mo/4 yo/6 yo, and she’s likely in for a shock lol

Re: Babysitter cost ... question
$20 per hour sounds reasonable, assuming she is really good, knows CPR/First Aid, etc.

She's the oldest of 6 and has worked at IPlay America, was a mother's helper when she was in HS and babysits as well. She was a counselor too so does have experience with kids. She's in college studying OT and wants to work with kids.
I told her ask for $20 and if she says too much don't go less than $18/hr.
