We are hybrid too and still remote. Middle school is going well, 3rd grade not so much.
The kids are broken into two cohorts and all kids will be connected via Google classroom. While the kids are in person, the kids on Google classroom are receiving the same instruction at the same time. My 3rd grader has full remote kids in his class (I'm sure my 5th grader does as well).
This is day 3. Day 1 went well since it was just getting used to things. Day 2 was asynchronous so it went ok. Today - middle school is going great but, 3rd grade is going horribly. He doesn't want to participate, we are fighting, screaming, crying. I'm so stressed about this. While I'm trying to work.
Right now I wrote an assignment for him since I was done getting him to write full sentences so he's not back until 11:40. He will be in a Google meet until 12:55 for lunch and then he has work on his own until 2:30 when he has another meet.
Just wanted to send you hugs. Hope the day gets better.

We are on a hybrid model, so every other day is in person. First in person day for mine was yesterday. So far so good. Same classroom all day with say cohort of kids with the exception of one period (Spanish), where they move to another classroom. They don't have to wear a mask at their desk. Only when they can't socially distance. My 8th grader has 10 kids in her class. They can eat outside sitting on the blacktop (that's comfy), but mine said there were so many bees, so she went in. Gym is outdoors on the track where they just walk, so at least they get fresh air. Temps taken by staff when we drop off, and a health survey.
There were a lot of complaints on day 1 from parents about the mask policy. Our Superintendent and district policy specifically said masks were not required while seated at their desk. But, many teachers were making their own rules, and having the kids wear the masks all day long. I'm assuming because they aren't comfortable, but they knew the district policy and plans when deciding to teach in person. Many public complaints in our FB community group, so a call went out to clarify, and I suspect the teachers were spoken to, because mine had no issues yesterday in class.
Oh and to add, our remote days aren't live. There is no set time to log in. They just have to log in at some point. X time help would be live though at a set time, if they need help. Mine is still sleeping I do hope we go back 5 days at some point this school year!
This is what is concerning about the hybrid model though. When are teachers supposed to be making, posting, and giving feedback for remote instruction when they are teaching in person every day? It just seems impossible to do all that and do a halfway decent job. I hope parents are understanding of this bc it seems the remote instruction is an afterthought. Not to mention, in some districts those same teachers are also assigned to full remote students. It's crazy.
Our hybrid model is actually being implemented very well and I am pleased so far. It seems to be flowing okay and it is way more planned out and organized then in the spring. All of the instruction at the elementary and middle school level is live, there are no pre-recorded videos. Also, my kids keep the same EXACT schedule on remote days as they do on their in-person days so they are working and learning all day with small breaks in between.
The teachers in the middle school switch between teaching in person and teaching remote. For example they will teach Math period 1 in person and then period 2 they will go to a dedicated "virtual" classroom within the building and go remote to teach the same lesson again for the kids at home. The learning for both the hybrid kids and the full remote kids is the same but separate.
In elementary, there are a few meetings a day with their primary, in-person teacher and then they also have assigned a full remote teacher (one per grade level) to fill in the gaps. A few times throughout the day they go asynchronous for a little while, never more than 20'ish minutes.
Both the middle school and elementary are still getting specials such as art and gym even when remote. They also leave time every day in the afternoon for a "check in" where kids can get additional feedback, express concerns, ask questions etc.
Remote learning and hybrid model is of course not ideal, full time is best, but given the circumstances they really are doing an impressive job so far. I am happy with our hybrid model and I hope things continue to go well and infection rates stay low so my kids can eventually return full time, in person.

See this is why elementary needs to be full time in person. At first I thought because of child care issues for younger kids, but also this. Kids younger than middle school do NOT do well with remote learning. It's a disaster. Their attention span is not great for it at all. Older kids are more mature and responsible and can deal with it way better IMO. I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

Thanks - I know this post was about in person but, when someone commented about how the hybrid model works... I'm interested to see how it will work with 1/2 the class in person and as it moves along. I hope they do small group virtual work as it's a co-teach with a full time TA. I think my son would get more out of it.

From a teacher standpoint who is good with technology, it will be very challenging to meet everyone’s needs. The fact that I have no social cues to read makes it even more challenging. Teachers change lessons on the spot depending upon how kids are reacting to it. Today, we were 100% virtual and most of my students had off their cameras. The ones that didn’t I could not see their faces since I needed to share my screen which means I can see like 2 faces.
Some schools near me already have positive cases. One is now 100% virtual until further notice. All it takes is one person to not follow the procedures.
As for not wearing masks in the room, I believe your district is wrong about not requiring them at all times. I have actually gotten into a fight with my home district over this. I am going to write another email tonight actually. My son is wearing a mask all day even if the teacher says he can take it off. It’s very uncomfortable but it’s necessary. This is a respiratory virus transmitted by respiratory particles that are released through breathing, talking, coughing, sneezing, etc. Even breathing over the course of the day can cause a high viral load in a room. The DOH near me says if you are in a room with someone and you don’t wear a mask, you need to quarantine regardless of social distancing.
And as much as others keep saying teachers can just take a leave, do you not realize that teachers are people who need jobs just like everyone else?

I dont know exact details, but they can take a leave and receive 2 thirds of their pay. You cant just make up your own rules when your "boss" has set the standards though. Kids in essential care through Scope didn't wear masks, and not a soul got sick. Staff included. So who knows. But, protocols are protocols and many people chose their method of schooling in my particular district based on the policies set forth to us, which included no masks unless you can't socially distance yourself. Like when we eat an indoor dining. We can remove our masks, and there isn't an issue with all these droplets making people sick in restaurants with unmasked people. And no outbreak of the servers working indoors all day around unmasked patrons either. And kids can wear their masks all day if they choose.

Back to School
We just got an email that DD's teacher (kindergarten) is "unavailable" for orientation tomorrow and on the first day of school on Monday. She is also the only one of the K teachers who has not posted a welcome letter or any info for her class.
While of course I hope she's ok, I can't help but wonder if she's going to jump ship.
So......we haven't started yet and I can already say it isn't going well at all!

Re: Back to School
My kids have worn masks all day with no complaints. I do feel like a lot of this anxiety and discomfort is put on them by adults. Kids are very resilient and understand listening to authority.
Hugs to all the teachers. This year is hard Hugs to all the moms. This year is hard.
There is no answer that meets everyone’s needs. We all need to be open to what we can do to support our community, not just what works for our own personal situation.
