Bacterial Infection in Big Toe... Anyone have ANY experience here???
DS has had a bacterial infection in his big toe for a couple weeks now. He has been on an antibiotic since last Tuesday, had to have it drained last Thursday and SEEMED to be getting better. Now, it seems to have come back. The toe never really did return to it's normal color, but he had more trouble sleeping last night again and now his three middle toes also look red, the place that they drained it (underneath the cuticle) looks like it's pulling away from the toe, and there is a white pocket on the left corner of his toenail at the top. I know this is odd, but have any of you heard of this or anything like it??? I feel so bad for my little guy. DH has to take him back to the Ped today at 3:30 and I just know they are going to have to drain it again.... But, why won't it go away????
Sorry, this is long, but I feel awful for him, I can't quit crying.... And I know he feels just as yucky.

I would take him to a podiatrist. You dont want the infection in his toes to spread.

He has another pediatrician appointment at 3:30 today. It just seems to be getting worse.

My nephew had this problem. He had a staph infection in his toe. I believe he had to go without shoes/socks for a while and was put on a very strong antibiotic. It took about a month to clear up.

That's why I would take him to a podiatrist who specializes in this stuff. you dont want him to get a staph infection. I dont know that there are pediatric podiatrists, I would call one in your area or see if your ped. can recommend one. I would call him now as opposed to waiting. infection can spread pretty quickly.
ETA: and I agree with Summerluvv...I wouldn't put socks on. Bacteria breeds in heat and sweat.

Im glad you are going back...bc staph infections are very scary if is one. If they give him a stronger antibiotic, I would get him a probiotic at the drugstore to help with side effects. Culturelle is the brand we use. My DS was on a very effective antibiotic in the Spring but one that was known for bad side effects and he had no bad reaction when he had the priobiotic, I know my Dr. NEVER told me about it, luckily another Mom did. Good luck with everything.

If you don't mind me asking, what antibiotic was your son on? I always give him Culturelle with any antibiotic but he still seems to get bad diarrhea and a bad diaper rash. And NO appetite this time, and this one he is on is Septra.

Was he on the antibiotic for that whole month? So, I wonder if I should not let him sleep in footy pjs???

It was Clindamycin.

I'm not sure to be honest. He was school age at the time so he even went to school in a sandal (it was winter). I would put him to bed without the footy pj's on. Maybe put a sock on one foot.

I agree with the OP.... I think a podiatrist is needed... I think the podiatry aspect is more important than the pediatric aspect. you can always ask the Pod to consult with the Ped when prescribing meds.... or do what I do and call the ped with the prescription and double check to make sure s/he thinks it's ok to take
