Bad Reaction to Amoxicillian? Any alternatives?
Sash has been on amoxicillan since Tues due to an ear infection. Yesterday she pooped SEVEN times and started developing a pretty bad diaper rash.
I called the nurse and they said, well that can happen on amoxicillian and to give her binding food (this is a baby that needs prunes every AM for breakfast and prune juice to poop regularly and effortlessly), and to use Butt Paste on her tush.
Her rash is significantly worse this morning-- and I htink it;s making her uncomfortable. I am also worried about her becoming dehydrated.
I don't think I can take 7 more days of this. Did anyone else's DC have a bad reaction to amoxicillian-- are there alternative medications? I am going to call my doc's office again in an hour.

i do not know about what else you can use for the amox. but for her rash get malox (pr Milk of mag) mix it with balmex and a&d ointment, leave her diaper lose and paste it on thick and it really heals it quick. there is a post here i have to find how to do it at night to clear it up quick let me find it.
Link to how to help the rash at night
Hope she feels better soon!

Randi, Chels is currently on amoxacillyn as well and she has been pooping more frequently, I think it's the nature of the beast...I would keep giving her the medicine but treat the diaper rash, I've used the old wives tale of mixing mylanta with her diaper cream and that actually has worked when she had a really bad diaper rash before

Re: Bad Reaction to Amoxicillian? Any alternatives?
Diarhea unfortunately is a side effect of Amoxicillan and alot of other antibotics. Samantha is also on Amoxicillian (since Tuesday also) and I was hesitant to give it to her because there is history of bad allergic reactions to it in my family. So far, she's doing well on it. When she was on antibotics for her UTI a few month ago, they gave her Suprex (because I didn't want her on the Amoxicillian), she also had diarhea.
I hope Sasha feels better soon!

Re: Bad Reaction to Amoxicillian? Any alternatives?
There are alternatives to Amoxiicillian as I am allergric to it. That and Erithraymycin(sp?) usually just call it EES. Anyways...somtimes if if was a new doctor they would look stumped to me...Like what am I going to give her..but there is alternatives...ask you doc. Right now I'm drawing a blank on what I too as a child. Ceclaw(?) I'm pretty sure I took that alot for ear infections.

Re: Bad Reaction to Amoxicillian? Any alternatives?
Yes there are - not sure what they are but DS is allergic to it as well. He got a bad rash all over his entire body and the ped took him off it immediately. At that point he had been on it for 7 out of the 10 days for an ear infection so they just checked his ears and stopped all medication, and told me to bring him back if the infection came back (which it didn't).

Re: Bad Reaction to Amoxicillian? Any alternatives?
Antibiotics as a whole wreak havoc on a baby's system. DS was on Omnicef last year and it made his poop turn red and he had diarrhea for a week!
Since it kills good bacteria as well as the bad, we gave him acidophilus and yogurt to help his stomach (peds orders). After he finished the course of antibiotics, all was well again! I hope she feels better!

Re: Bad Reaction to Amoxicillian? Any alternatives?
AJ has had about 7 double ear infections in the past 8mo.
Ive been through multiple antibotics. ALL of them have basically the same side affects. Loose bowels, vomiting, rash, etc.
So far AJ has had none of these side affects. Which they ALWAYS ask us since she's been on so many of them and so they are surprised that NONE of them have set her off.. yet. For me, I just wish I didnt have to give her any drugs and the ear infections would stop
So to answer the question..yes there are alternatives. At least four that I'm aware of.
But the underlying issue of loose bowels may not be solved.

Re: Bad Reaction to Amoxicillian? Any alternatives?
My DD has a terrible reaction to amoxicillan. She was only on it once and after the 6th day I called the doctor and flat out told her I was taking her off because watching DD suffer from it was just too much to handle. She was supposed to be on it for 10 and I couldn't do it.
I used Butt Paste to clear the diaper rash and put Flor-a-stor in her bottles to stop the diarrhea (the children's version).
I can't remember what antibiotics have been given instead but there is a note on her file at the ped to NEVER EVER give DD amoxicillan again.
Hope your DD feels better soon.
