Maddie had a bad allergic reaction...
We gave Yobaby yogurt with her dinner. After a few spoonfuls, she started fussing and rubbing her eyes. Suddenly her face EXPLODED into hives and her one eye was swelled almost shut! Her nose just opened and she was a drooling, boogery mess.
Thank G*d the PED was still there so we brought her in. She got some Benedryl and they watched her. She seems OK now. She nursed and still sounds congested, but she went right to sleep. I'm terrified though- the worst is past us, right? She won't get WORSE at this point?
Looks like she may have inherited her daddy's allergies..... I don't get it though- I've been drinking milk the whole time I've been breastfeeding, she has had formula 2 or 3 times that was milk-based.
I now realize she DID have a similar reaction to cheese. At the time, the NP at the PED said that it sounded like a skin allergy to something she may have crawled through rather than an allergy to cheese.
If my ever calm husband wasn't here I don't know what I would have done. I was totally panicking.
My poor baby.....

Re: Maddie had a bad allergic reaction...
I'm sorry. I know how scary that is, we went through it a few months back. Are you going to have her allergy tested, or are you pretty sure it is a dairy allergy?

Re: Maddie had a bad allergic reaction...
It IS very scary to witness a reaction like that. That's exactly how Emily reacted with milk as an infant She is severely allergic.
They say a secondary reaction could occur but I think it's rare. I'd just watch her closely and if you want, just give her another dose of the benedryl when the time passes and it's safe.
FYI - you can buy children's benedryl and ask your dr for the correct dosage (either half or full teaspoon).
You may also want to meet with an allergist to officially diagnose an allergy or rule it out if in fact it was from another reason.

My nephew has life threatening allergies. They also sell benadryl strips-you can probably have your doc tell you how to cut them up for dosage since they immediately are dissolved on the tongue

Alot of times they just grow out of the allergy. Especially if you don;t *test* it...My son had a bad reaction any time we gave him milk, cheese.. even the processed cr@p in goldfish & cheez its.. It lasted until he was about 4...
he's completely fine now...

is this supposed to be funny? Maybe it's a joke between you girls, but I don't think food allergies and their reactions is anything to laugh about. I hope you never see your infant's face swell so bad he/she is hardly recognizeable.

I don't see testing for the allergy to have any correllation to outgrowing the allergy.

Re: Maddie had a bad allergic reaction...
For the OP - They only make Childrens Bensdryl - The dosage is 1 teaspoon.
's - I know how scary that is. It has been my experience with DD1 that she could eat something 100 times and on the 101th time, have a serious reaction. She had been eating string beans forever - We made them for dinner on her 2nd birthday - started clawing at her tongue and making herself vomit - broke out in hives - I thought I was going to have to use her Epi Pen. It was horrible.
Reactions can sometimes get worse - But that hasn't been my experience. Generally after giving a couple of doses of Bendryl DD has been ok.
Also - if a reaction is going to occur it's usually right away, but can happen up to 24 hours later.
I've been thru it all with my DD's and their food/enviornmental allergies. FM if you ever have any questions.

Our allergist has said that "most" kids outgrow dairy and egg allergies by age 3. I for that...
