Bad Smell in House - How would you get rid of it?
ok, so you all or most of you know of our Family Room remodel. Well every since we put up our ceiling, there has been this sort of fish smell when you walk into the room. We just can't figure it out. There is no fish in the room, never was. We have new insulation, all new walls, new ceiling and cement floor with laminate going over right now. We just can't figure it out. Any ideas? We smelt the floor, we smelt the ceiling and we don't smell in stronger at those places. All new paint on the walls too. BM Natura paint.
How would you go about getting rid of the smell if you don't know where it is coming from? This room is ground level not underground.
TIA!

Re: Bad Smell in House - How would you get rid of it?
i would think the best thing to do is keep the windows open and air the place out......but that's probably not going to be easy with the weather we've been having lately...
i would try that and maybe one of those air filter/purifier things

Re: Bad Smell in House - How would you get rid of it?
Sometimes new insulation has a fishy smell. Are all your walls closed/sheetrocked already? Is there any insulation not covered yet?
It could be I think a whole mixture of smells.......including the paint.......I think in time it will go away.
Is it slight......or reallllllllly bad?

It started out slight and now it's getting worse. I started to search online and I read that it might be electric inside the house. Thank god we have an electrician coming on Friday for other work. We will ask him to check everything out. And we called LIPA to check the lines outside. Scary!

Re: Bad Smell in House - How would you get rid of it?
We are thinking it's just all the products in the room together right now. The new paint, the ceiling planks and laminate flooring. I'll try the boiled water with ginger. Good idea. Hopefully we can leave the windows open for the next couple of days and just get fresh air in the room. Hopefully nothing else is wrong in the room. Because we have smelled every area of the room and we don't smell it any stronger in any one area.

you know what too, with all this rain and not letting things dry well I bet is doing it as well, all the fumes together.

to get ride of a smell, you can leave open a few boxes of baking powder, or if you have rugs, you can sprinkle it on it and then vaccum up after it sits 20 mins. But leave the windows open to. I have never heard of this, that would be so odd if it was from the electrical.

Re: Bad Smell in House - How would you get rid of it?
i second the baking soday. it can take away the smell without adding any other scents to the room (floral smells on top might be even grosser!)

we had this and it turns out there was a nest of baby birds in our AC and... well they did not survive.
the smell was horrific but it went away once we cleaned out the nest.

I have this too. It's from the new ceiling tiles ! We have put up a drop ceiling in our den. It's the fibers in it that cause the smell. I have heard that Home Depot sells a box of something that you put in the room that gets rid of the smell. I just don't know what it's called. It's a strange smell and I know exactly what you are talking about.

Re: Bad Smell in House - How would you get rid of it?
Ok I just got off the phone w Armstrong who is the maker of the ceiling tiles I installed. Turns out we didn't air out the tiles for 24hrs and that is why it smells lol. And he advised me for us to take out two tiles on each end of our grid and place small fans there to air out the area between the ceiling and grid. I do not know if you have this space between your new ceiling or not but that is what is causing the smell. I guess you can say it's the void between the new ceiling and the other one. HTH
edited cause I saw your pics of your room and you used Armstrong too. Has to be same problem and smell !!!

OMG, thank you so much Beth! Well I don't think we can air it out like suggested, because they are stapled up already to the beams, but I'm going to get out a fan and open the windows. Hopefully that will help. Thanks. GL with yours too. I can't stand the smell anymore.
