Dinner at a Bad Chef's House

My family and I are invited to have a BBQ at a friend's house tomorrow and as much as I love her... I don't want to go. Because she is a REALLY BAD COOK. So we aren't going - we told her we had other plans.. but sooner or later we will wind up at her house and she will cook again.

I have friends who can't cook well.. and they admit it. They order in or make super simple stuff. This woman thinks she cooks great. And I don't have the heart to tell her that everything she makes tastes AWFUL. Because she is SO proud of her creations.

How would you handle this situation? So far I have managed by inviting her to my house whenever we get together - or by going out. But she is moving into a new home soon and I will have to go over there at some point.

What could get messed up at a BBQ? Or at least I would think there'd be less things to get screwed up!!

I think a BBQ would be a safer bet than some future dinner party!

Take Pepto as an appetizer. Chat Icon

How about offering to bring a dish or two, to help "lift the burden of cooking for so many people"?

how about eating a full meal before going to her house and then if u get hungry, u can snack on chips, fruits, veggies - things she didn't make herself

would that work?

A BBQ is a gourmet affair at her house... we aren't talking burgers and dogs.. we are talking homemade salads and odd former life forms with seasonings that should never be mixed ever.

Re: Dinner at a Bad Chef's House

I'd probably eat beforehand or offer to bring something and only eat what you bring (but push around food to be polite).

aw, I'd go anyway and suck it up, your not going there just for the food right?I'd probably eat something first so I'd only have to eat a minimal amount of her food.

She is the type to come over with a full plate and say "OMG! Did you try my Tofu Tomato Ice Cream? It is to DIE for! Here!" and watch your face while you chew and swallow.

I sometimes think she does it to torture people... but she really and truly does think she is a great and creative chef.

This is what I would suggest as well.

We know someone who thinks she cooks ok, but we're really not fans of her particular cooking style.

The burgers are greasy, the pasta salad is over cooked, she puts too much garlic and onions and salt in the food, etc.

We usually eat before-hand and eat only the veggies and chips.

We have a friend who just cannot cook burgers. I got one once and it was completely raw in the middle, but burnt on the outside. EVERYONE's burger was raw. He just has no clue how to bbq. So yes, bbq can be screwed up.

Here is my idea.

Where do you live?

I would go to Zorn's and pick up trays of their amazing fried skinless chicken, their mashed potatoes and some ribs. Bring a bottle of champagne and be done with itChat Icon

Re: Dinner at a Bad Chef's House

I would just suck it up... it's one meal out a million meals in your life. If she asks why you're not eating a lot tell her your stomach is feeling a little funky but what you have had you really enjoyed.

REALLY REALLY REALLY bad. Really bad. Bad to the point that the last time I ate anything she cooked I was in the bathroom throwing up.

I am DEFINITELY not going tomorrow... but I have to think of a way to handle it over the long haul.. because I do like her.

I guess the overwhelming suggestion is to not tell her that she is a bad cook and to suck it up every now and then and eat what she puts out.

Re: Dinner at a Bad Chef's House

Tomato Tofu Ice Cream. Is that an example you used or did this person actually make it. That is disgusting.

However, if an odd food like that is offered to you, no matter how good they claim it is, I'd still say No thank you. I say no to food all the time to foods I know I wont like when sometimes they're almost forced down my throat.

Unless, you bring some of your own dishes, and just fill up on that. She cant be watching your every move to see if you are eating all of her stuff that she made. I'd assume she'd have other people to entertain.

But I guess if you feel more comfy not going, which is what it seems you are goin to do, then ditch it.

I would offer to host or bring a plate. Eat beforehand and make up food allergies to tofu. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Well maybe over the long haul you can develop IBS and only be able to eat a restricted diet. Chat Icon

ETA: and bring something you can eat due to your special dietary needs.

Re: Dinner at a Bad Chef's House

I have a questionable stomach anyway so I have to refrain from eating trouble foods, or overeating.

If there is one thing you do like, you could give yourself a larger portion of that, and small portions of the other stuff so you can still honestly tell her you ate it.

Then if she pushes, you can let her know that your stomach has become somewhat sensitive (just don't tell her it's to her food only) and you would rather not overeat.

I made that up. She does make weird things though... for example - pineapples and bacon in orange jello with curry flavored whipped cream. She thinks it is creative because she puts things together that nobody has done before... but there is a REASON that you don't mix pickled herrings in cream sauce with egg salad and blueberries.

I thought "bad" meant over salting, under seasoning, something along that line. Not all out disgusting! Chat Icon

In that case, if I were close to her, I would very gently tell her that a lot of those food cominations don't go well together.

Chat Icon Chat Icon I would still go, but, I'd also bring a dish so you can pick at it.
If she questions you on trying anything just tell her your stomach isn't feeling right.
