Re: Banking Blood cord..anyone give me some 411 on this?
Hey Deb,
We decided to do it because we have diabetes, history of stroke and heart problems, and cancer that run in our families. From a lot of the research that I've read, cord blood cells are being used/will be used in the future to help cure many of these diseases. Also, when you use your own banked cells, as opposed to using a public bank if/when god forbid, you or your child or family member needs it, there is a much higher percentage that they will work. We felt that although its a lot of money down, at $100 and something a month, it was worth added insurance for our family... and honestly, I can spend that one day shopping. LOL. Hope this helps you a bit!!
ETA: if you read the research, you will find that noone is really against the banking of cord blood cells, the arguments are mainly about whether or not you need to privately bank or if its just as easy/good to use the public banks since there are so many people that donate, so there is a good chance that you could find a match. For us, we werent willing to chance it.

Re: Banking Blood cord..anyone give me some 411 on this?
Consider it a very expensive and unlikely to be used insurance policy. There are a few rare circumstances now where having cord blood could be helpful. (Of course its also possible that if your child was in that situation that cord blood might be available from a public bank.) Labs are also continuing to research additional uses for cord blood -- so maybe in 5 years it will be useful for more issues.
If you've got money to spare, and are risk adverse, just do it so you don't have to think about the what ifs.
If you are pinching pennies together, I'd pass on it and consider donating to a public bank.

I just heard from my Drs office that there is a new bank in her area & that she checked it out & it is a viable option. I can ask her about the details when I see her next week.

Re: Banking Blood cord..anyone give me some 411 on this?
We went back and forth on doing this for baby #2 (we did for baby #1) and finally decided to go ahead and bank this baby's blood as well.
For me, it was because of family history of leukemia. I just didn't want to take the chance of god forbid needing it down the road and NOT doing it simply because of cost. I don't think I could have lived with myself. But if I didn't have a family history of cancer that could potentially be treated by cord blood, I probably would have donated it publicly.
The AAP suggests NOT banking privately unless there's a family history of disease because the chances are so low of actually ever needing it.
I think donating it is a great idea whenever possible if you don't think you'll need to bank it privately.

Re: Banking Blood cord..anyone give me some 411 on this?
I am leaning towards doing this privately because even tho at the moment the public banks can supply what is needed, who knows if in the future it may be necessary for certain life-saving procedures to have access to your OWN cord blood? This is how I am thinking....

Re: Banking Blood cord..anyone give me some 411 on this?
We are doing it. We have a history of diabetes on both sides, and heart disease on my side, but I guess the main reason I am doing it is bc my younger brother died of Leukemia and I often wonder if this was around in the 70's he may still be here.
Granted, banking is not a guarantee, but you never know!
If you are worried about the cost, I think most places have payment plans.

Sorry, that's not true and a false impression given to most people. My DH works in the industry, I can confidently say that it is actually quite amazing what they can currently do with the cord blood and it is used more then you would think and will continually to be used more and more throughout the years.
With regards to the expense-- it's not that bad if you consider what you are paying for. I went with CBR and it was around $1500 for a set-up fee and $125 for an annual fee.
BTW, I should add that the disadvantage with going to a public bank is that you could wait for a very very long time for a match. If you bank privately, you can have your cord blood in less than 24 hours.

We are doing it through CBR. We went with a lump sum payment of approximately $3400, which will cover the procedure, the initial cost and annual storage fee for 18 years.
Heart disease races through DH's family and it was just something I wanted to do - my doctor recommended doing it and said that the potential for treatment through umbilical cord cells is limitless.

I'm not doing it. Seems like a waste of money to me when we can use a public bank if something goes wrong. From what I've read there are some times that you can't even use the privately banked blood on your own child.

I think I was a bit misunderstood here, considering I did decide to bank my DD's cord blood. It was very expensive, and is unlikely to be used because most people have healthy children! But yes, there are valid situations where cord blood can be used, and we had the money so I opted to do it. I just don't think its worth scaring all moms into not being able to put food on the table...

I heard that the child who donates it can rarely use it even if they needed it...but a sibling could.

Re: Banking Blood cord..anyone give me some 411 on this?
To me, $1500 initial fee and the $125 yearly fee for peace of min dis worth it. If $$ is an issue, that's a different story. Personally if $$ were the issue, I would forego the Coach diaper bag, the gazillion clothes and the 2K baby furniture and bank my kid's cord blood...because we just don't know what the future will bring.

Re: Banking Blood cord..anyone give me some 411 on this?
I know, I was thinking public until just recently too....but we really don't know what will happen 10 years from now with the great strides that are being made.
My niece is getting her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Tufts and from what she tells me they are working on right now, we will very soon be using our own cord blood for life-saving procedures that aren't even considered yet....

I know, it's a tough call. My aunt is in genetics and told me that we should go the public banking route. Who knows?
