Bankruptcy Question
I just feel so terrible for my coworker right now. She is going through a really terrible divorce right now. Her soon to be ex is a real dirtbag. He had her car repossesed a few weeks ago, leaving her and her 3 children without a car. She has been driving a rental, and went last week to buy a new car. She got a call this morning that her loan was denied, because her husband filed for bankruptcy. Without notifying her, his or her attorney, no one. My question is- does this credit flaw now follow her forever? Or will this be erased from her history once the divorce is final? Is there any way she can fight this being on her credit report, seeing as how she was never consulted, nor did she ever sign anything? Any help is appreciated. TIA!

Re: Bankruptcy Question
No, the divorce isn't finalized- he is suing for joint custody, and he keeps adding things that are delaying it. poor girl. I said that to her- that bankrupcy takes awhile- but maybe the filing was what showed on her report? She applied for the car loan as herself, with her father as a cosigner...

She should've been approved...especially if her father cosigned...that's really odd.
However, I honestly don't know anything about divorce and the impact of credit.....but I'm pretty sure a bankruptcy would not show up on her credit report so quickly...and it's not her bankruptcy but her future ex-husbands...
I think there's a mistake/mis-understanding somewhere....
regardless to her and you're a sweetie for extending your help.

Re: Bankruptcy Question
She needs to get copies of her credit reports PRONTO - all 3 to see what is showing up on there.
I'd scrutinize them VERY carefully and dispute anything that doesn't feel right...
ETA - I wouldn't think a spouse's bankruptcy would show on YOUR credit report, but perhaps if you have joint cards? I'd get the credit reports and call / write the reporting agencies to dispute it. Perhaps then she'd get an explanation of it all.
Poor thing.
