basement: built in cabinets or not?

we're finishing our basement and i have to figure out if we should do built in cabinets/shelves or not.

The more i look on pinterest, the more i'm not sure since it's permanent. I want storage for all the kids toys and to hide them.

so if you have built in cabinets/shelves, do you regret them?

just not sure which is the better way to go.

We looked at a house that had built ins in their basement. We made an offer, but did not really want to help them pay for the built ins. They declined and ended up taking the house off of the market. No other offers came in for them. No one wanted to compensate them for the built ins. So my feeling is, if you want them and can see you using them, then great, get them. But I would not over do it or think you are going to get what you paid for them back if you decide to sell.

I personally prefer closets so you can hide whatever it is you want to store.

I did built ins. I did use a closet company so, essentially it is a closet system that I customized. I knew if I bought the pieces separately I probably would have spent more than I did on the whole wall unit. I technically could take it with me too if we ever moved. It is only screwed into the wall and I kept the back open so the paint color shows through.
