I don't know the answer, but you can just call the Town of Hempstead and ask them. You don't need to tell them where you live. You could just tell them you are thinking about buying a house and would like to know the answer to this question. GL!

I would say that it is in the interest of safety... having an outside entrance from basement. I don't know why they wouldn't be mandatory if the basement is "living space".

Re: basement entrance... question

I don't think they would raise your taxes by just adding an entrance.

They raise your taxes either by adding bathrooms, living space, porches, patios, pools, new heating or AC systems, garages, etc.

I don't think adding a door would add to your taxes. But if you add a door and they find out you have living space in the finished basement, they can maybe raise your taxes with that (although I don't even think they consider basement finished space "liveable").

I would just add the door and deal with them later (or never). Chat Icon
